History of Anton
Anton was started in 1924. It was built on land that used to be part of a large ranch called the Spade Ranch. The owner of the ranch, William Leonard Ellwood, worked with a company to plan the town.
The town was named after J.F. Anton. He was an important person who worked for the Santa Fe railroad.
The Youngest Mayor
Anton's first mayor was Paul Grover Whitfield. He was born in 1908, so when he became mayor in 1924, he was only 16 or 17 years old! He told everyone he was 18 so he could take the job. This makes him the youngest mayor ever in Texas, and his record still stands today. It's not clear if he was elected or if he just volunteered. Back then, people often made agreements with a handshake, so official identification wasn't always needed.
Geography of Anton
Anton is located in a very flat area of Texas called the High Plains. This area is part of the Llano Estacado. Just west of Anton, there's a dry riverbed called Yellow House Draw.
