Anuket facts for kids
Anuket was an important goddess in ancient Egypt. She was known as the goddess of the Nile River. People worshipped her especially in places like Elephantine Island. This island is where the Nile begins its journey through Egypt. She was also worshipped in nearby parts of Nubia. Her special temple was built on the Island of Seheil.
The Egyptians believed that Anuket was the daughter of two other gods. These were Khnum and Satis. Khnum and Satis were thought to be the gods of the Nile's source. Because of this, Anuket was seen as part of their divine family.
Anuket's Symbols and Appearance
The ancient Egyptians believed that two fast-moving parts of the Nile were Anuket's arms. Because these parts of the river moved quickly, Anuket became linked to other fast things. These included arrows and the swift gazelle.
In art, Anuket was often shown in different ways. Sometimes she appeared as a gazelle. Other times, she had the head of a gazelle on a human body. She was also often shown wearing a special headdress made of feathers.
The Festival of Anuket
Every year, when the Nile River began its annual flood, a special event took place. This was called the Festival of Anuket. During this festival, people would show their thanks to Anuket. They would throw valuable gifts into the river. These gifts included coins, gold, and jewelry. They did this to thank Anuket for the life-giving water.
During this time, a special rule was lifted. In many parts of Egypt, people usually did not eat fish. Fish were considered sacred or holy. But during the Festival of Anuket, this rule was temporarily put aside.
