The Story of Apache
Before August 1, 1901, the land where Apache now stands was part of the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Reservation. This land was set to be opened for new settlers.
A man named William A. Richards, who was in charge of the land lottery, suggested that this area should be a town. He hoped the town would be named "Richards" after him. However, officials from the Rock Island Railway decided to name the community Apache instead.
The Last Land Run
On August 6, 1901, a special event called a "land run" was held for lots in Apache. This was the very last land run to ever happen in Oklahoma.
Within just a few hours after the run, many businesses quickly opened. Five lumberyards and six saloons were ready for customers. A large tent even served as the town's first grocery store.
Early Town Government
The first town officials for Apache were chosen at an outdoor meeting on the evening of August 6, 1901. E. E. Blake was elected as the mayor, and F. E. Richey became the city clerk. Other important people appointed were I. F. Crow as the city attorney and Sam Wass as the city marshal. Apache officially became an incorporated town on July 22, 1902.
