Scientific classification

The Arabian tree frog (Hyla felixarabica) is a small frog that lives in the Middle East. You might also hear it called the Sanchiang tree toad. Scientists have found this frog in countries like Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Syria.

Scientists have noticed that there are two main groups of Arabian tree frogs. One group lives in the hills of Yemen and the Asir Mountains in Saudi Arabia. The other group is found in Syria, Israel, and the hills of Jordan.

For a long time, scientists thought the Arabian tree frog was the same as the Middle East tree frog. But after studying them closely, they found out they are actually different species. Scientists believe these two frog species started to become separate about 8.4 million years ago. They think a large crack in the Earth, called the Dead Sea Rift, helped to separate the two groups of frogs. Over millions of years, these separated groups slowly changed and became distinct species.
