Aram Shah (Persian: آرام شاه) was the second Sultan of the Delhi Sultanate. He ruled for a short time, from December 1210 to June 1211. He became ruler in Lahore after the first Sultan, Qutb ud-Din Aibak, died suddenly. Aram Shah was later defeated by Iltutmish, who then became the new Sultan and ruled from Delhi.

Who Was Aram Shah?

Aram Shah's background is not very clear. Historians are not sure if he was the son of Qutb al-Din Aibak. Some old writings suggest he might have been Aibak's son. However, other historical texts say that Aibak only had daughters and no sons. What we do know is that Aram Shah took over as ruler in the city of Lahore after Aibak's death.

His Time as Sultan

In 1210, Sultan Qutb al-Din Aibak died unexpectedly in Lahore while playing a sport. He had not chosen anyone to rule after him. To keep the kingdom stable, the important Turkic leaders, called maliks and amirs, in Lahore chose Aram Shah to be the next Sultan.

However, not all the Turkic leaders in the Sultanate agreed with this choice. Some of them, like the Khalji leaders in Bengal, started to rebel against Aram Shah. The kingdom also faced an attack from a nearby ruler named Nasir ad-Din Qabacha from Multan.

A group of powerful leaders, led by Ali-yi Ismail, decided to invite Iltutmish to become the Sultan instead. Iltutmish was a former slave of Aibak and was the governor of Badaun. He was known for his excellent service and Aibak had even called him like a son. Because of this, the nobles thought Iltutmish would be a good ruler.

Iltutmish marched to Delhi and took control of the city. He then defeated Aram Shah's army in a battle at a place called Bagh-i Jud. Aram Shah died during or after this battle. It is not fully clear if he was killed in the fighting or if he was executed as a prisoner. Two of his main officers, Aqsanqar and Farrukh Shah, also died in the battle. After this victory, Iltutmish became the new Sultan and made Delhi the capital of his rule.
