About Archibald Molbone

Archibald Molbone was born in Coventry, Rhode Island. His birthday was May 3, 1840. His parents were John Malbone and Huldah Corey.

Joining the Army

Archibald lived in West Greenwich, Rhode Island. In 1862, he decided to join the Union Army. He became a soldier on August 11, 1862.

He joined a group called Battery C, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery. This group used cannons in battles. While serving there, he was promoted to a new rank. He became a corporal, which is a junior leader.

Heroic Actions

Later, on December 29, 1864, Archibald moved to a different group. This new group was Battery G, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery. On the same day, he was promoted again. He became a sergeant, a higher leadership rank.

Sergeant Molbone fought in a very important battle. It was the Battle of Petersburg in Virginia. This battle happened on April 2, 1865.

During this fight, Archibald showed great courage. He was one of 20 special artillerymen chosen for a dangerous mission. They went with infantry soldiers (foot soldiers) to attack. They captured enemy cannons. Then, they quickly turned these cannons around. They used them against the Confederate soldiers.

For his bravery, Archibald Molbone received the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award a soldier can get for heroism. He received it on June 20, 1866. He finished his service as a sergeant on June 24, 1865.

Life After the War

After the war, Archibald Molbone settled down. By 1870, he lived in Coventry, Rhode Island. He worked as a farm laborer.

Later, around 1885, he moved to Scituate, Rhode Island. He was married to Mary Frances Marcure. They had four children together: one son and three daughters.

Sergeant Archibald Molbone passed away on February 28, 1912. He is buried in the Burton Potter Cemetery. This cemetery is in Scituate, Rhode Island.

Why His Name Is Spelled Differently

You might see Archibald's last name spelled in different ways. On official records, like census papers, it's often "Archibald Malbone." His grave marker even says "Archibald Malbourne."

However, on the list of Medal of Honor winners, it's "Archibald Molbone." It's likely that the different spellings are just mistakes. Sometimes, names were written down incorrectly by accident.
