Archie Lee Goodwin III (born August 17, 1994) is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for the Jiangsu Dragons in China. Before becoming a pro, he played college basketball for the University of Kentucky.

High School Basketball Journey

Archie Goodwin went to Sylvan Hills High School in Sherwood, Arkansas. He was a star player for his coach, Kevin Davis. Archie helped his team reach the state finals two years in a row.

Winning a State Championship

In his junior year (2010–2011), his team almost won the championship. They lost to Alma High School. But in his senior year (2011–2012), Archie led his team to victory! They won the Arkansas Class 5A state championship. In the final game, he scored 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the championship tournament.

Top High School Honors

Archie was recognized as the Gatorade Player of the Year for Arkansas twice. He was also chosen for the McDonald's All-American team. This means he was one of the best high school players in the entire country. He was also named a Parade All-American.

Experts ranked Archie very highly. ESPNU said he was the 15th best player in his class. Scout.com ranked him 9th, and Rivals.com ranked him 12th.

Choosing a College Team

Archie had many offers from top colleges. He chose to play for Kentucky. Other big schools like Arkansas, Memphis, Connecticut, and Kansas also wanted him.

College Basketball at Kentucky

Archie Goodwin was the top scorer for the 2012–13 Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball team. He played in 33 games, starting all of them. He averaged 14.1 points per game. He also averaged 4.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.1 steals. These efforts helped the Wildcats achieve a 21–12 record.

Memorable College Games

On November 21, he scored a career-high 28 points against Morehead State. Just two days later, he almost achieved a "triple-double" against LIU-Brooklyn. He scored 22 points, had nine rebounds, and nine assists. A triple-double means reaching double digits in three different stats.

After his first year, Archie decided to enter the 2013 NBA draft. He was one of the youngest players to declare for the draft that year.

Professional Basketball Career

Archie Goodwin has played for many teams since turning professional. He started his NBA career with the Phoenix Suns.

Phoenix Suns (2013–2016)

On June 27, 2013, the Oklahoma City Thunder picked Archie 29th in the 2013 NBA draft. His rights were then traded to the Golden State Warriors, and finally to the Phoenix Suns. He signed with the Suns on July 12, 2013.

First NBA Season (2013–14)

Archie made his NBA debut on October 30, 2013, against the Portland Trail Blazers. He scored his first NBA points on November 1 against the Utah Jazz. On November 19, he scored 16 points, his first time reaching double digits.

Sometimes, Archie played for the Bakersfield Jam in the NBA Development League (now G League). This helped him get more playing time. In the Suns' last game of the season, Archie scored a career-high 29 points.

Second NBA Season (2014–15)

Archie continued to split his time between the Suns and the Bakersfield Jam. He helped the Jam win a special tournament called the D-League Showcase. He was even named the tournament's MVP. He again finished the Suns' season strong, scoring 18 points in their final game.

Third NBA Season (2015–16)

Archie had some strong games in his third season. On January 21, 2016, he scored 20 points against the San Antonio Spurs. Two days later, he scored 24 points against the Atlanta Hawks. In that game, he made a game-winning three-pointer with less than a second left! He scored 26 points in his next game. On February 2, he had 18 points and a career-high 12 assists.

Archie left the Suns on October 24, 2016. The team's general manager said Archie had asked to be traded.

New Orleans Pelicans (2016)

On November 7, 2016, Archie signed with the New Orleans Pelicans. He played in three games for them before being released on November 20.

Greensboro Swarm (2016–2017)

Archie then joined the Greensboro Swarm in the NBA Development League on November 30, 2016. He played well, scoring 18 points in his first game with them.

Brooklyn Nets (2017)

On March 15, 2017, Archie signed a short-term contract with the Brooklyn Nets. He played well enough to earn a multi-year contract on April 4. In the Nets' last game of the season, he scored 20 points. He was released by the Nets on July 28, 2017.

Return to G League (2017–2019)

Archie spent more time in the NBA G League. He played for both the Greensboro Swarm and the Northern Arizona Suns during the 2017–18 season. In 2019, he joined the Maine Red Claws.

Playing Overseas (2019–Present)

Since 2019, Archie has played for several teams outside the United States.

  • He joined Ratiopharm Ulm in Germany (2020).
  • He played for Metropolitans 92 in France (2020–2021).
  • He signed with Budivelnyk in Ukraine in early 2022. He left the team due to the conflict in Ukraine.
  • He then played for Maccabi Rishon LeZion in Israel (2022).
  • He returned to BC Budivelnyk (2022–2023).
  • He played for Cariduros de Fajardo in Puerto Rico (2022 and 2023).
  • He joined Beirut Club in Lebanon (2023–2024).
  • He played for Ningbo Rockets in China (2024).
  • He joined El Calor de Cancún in Mexico (2024).
  • As of late 2024, he plays for the Jiangsu Dragons in China.

Archie's Family Life

Archie's stepfather, Datron Humphrey, first introduced him to basketball when he was young. His father, Archie Goodwin II, also played college basketball for Arkansas State University.
