BC Budivelnyk Kyiv is a professional basketball team from Kyiv, Ukraine. The team plays in the Ukrainian Basketball SuperLeague. Budivelnyk is known for winning many championships. They have won the Ukrainian championship a record eleven times and the Ukrainian Cup three times. They also won a Soviet championship in 1989.

The club is owned by PrivatBank, a banking and investing company. In 2018, the team had to stop playing in the Superleague because of money problems. But two years later, in 2020, they started playing again!

Team History: From SKIF to Budivelnyk

The club we know today as Budivelnyk was officially formed in 1962. Before that, it was another team from Kyiv called SKIF, which started in 1945. The team was created by a sports group called Avanhard and was supported by a local building company.

In the past, when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union, the team played its games at the Kyiv Sports Palace. This arena can hold 7,000 fans! Budivelnyk was one of the top basketball teams in the Soviet League. They won the Soviet League championship in 1989. After Ukraine became independent, they continued their success, winning the Ukrainian League 11 times.

Ups and Downs of the Team

After a long time of winning, the team faced some tough times. They had money problems and even had to play in a lower Ukrainian league. But in 2006, some business people helped the team by investing a lot of money. This allowed Budivelnyk to return to the top basketball league in Ukraine. Within two years, they became one of the strongest teams again, finishing second in the Ukrainian National League.

In 2010, the team's leaders talked with the head of Euroleague Basketball. They discussed the possibility of Budivelnyk joining the EuroLeague, which is a very important European basketball competition. The team was eventually given a special invitation to play in the 2013–14 EuroLeague season.

However, in June 2018, the Ukrainian Basketball Federation announced that Budivelnyk could not play in the Superleague. This was because the team owed money to its players. But the team didn't give up! In 2020, Budivelnyk started playing again in the 2020–21 SuperLeague season. They were also allowed to sign new players again after a ban was lifted.
