History of BC Budivelnyk

How the Club Started

The club started in 1945 as a team called SKIF. In 1962, it became Budivelnyk, which is the name it uses today. The team was part of a sports group called Avanhard. It was supported by a local building company.

In the past, Budivelnyk was one of the top basketball teams in the Soviet League. They played their home games at the Kyiv Sports Palace, which could hold 7,000 fans.

Winning Championships

Budivelnyk had a very successful period. They won the Soviet League championship in 1989. After Ukraine became independent, they continued their success. They won the Ukrainian League six times in a row from 1992 to 1997.

Challenges and Comeback

After many years of winning, the team faced some tough times. They had money problems and even had to play in a lower league in Ukraine. But in 2006, some business people helped the team. They invested a lot of money, which allowed Budivelnyk to return to the top league. Within two years, they were one of the strongest teams in Ukraine again.

In 2010, the club even talked about joining the Euroleague, which is a major European basketball competition. They later received a special invitation to play in the 2013–14 EuroLeague season.

Recent Years

In 2018, the Ukrainian Basketball Federation said that Budivelnyk could not play in the Superleague because of money owed to players. However, the club started up again in 2020. They were able to play in the 2020–21 SuperLeague season after their ban was lifted.

Where Does Budivelnyk Play?

BC Budivelnyk plays its home games at the Kyiv Sports Palace. This arena was built in 1960 and can hold 7,000 people. It's a big place for exciting basketball games!
