Malcolm Hakeem Delaney (born March 11, 1989) is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He played as a Point guard and shooting guard. Delaney grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and went to Towson Catholic High School. He played college basketball for the Virginia Tech Hokies men's basketball team.

After college, Delaney started his professional basketball career overseas. He played for teams like Élan Chalon in France, Budivelnyk Kyiv in Ukraine, and Bayern Munich in Germany. He also spent two seasons with PBC Lokomotiv Kuban in Russia. In 2016, he was named to the All-EuroLeague First Team, which is a big honor for players in Europe's top league.

Early Life and Family

Malcolm Delaney was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 11, 1989. His mother, Patricia, worked as a nurse and cared for children. His father, Vincent Jr., was a talented high school basketball player in Baltimore. He later played college basketball at Voorhees College. After college, Vincent Jr. became a social worker.

Malcolm's older brother, Vincent, played football in college for Stonehill College. When Malcolm was a child, he was very active in sports. He led his youth football team, Pop Warner, to a national championship. He also won a home run contest in Little League Baseball. At just seven years old, Malcolm was already practicing basketball with an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team.

High School Basketball

Delaney first attended McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland. There, he played both football and basketball. He was a starter on the Eagles' basketball team. They had a very successful freshman season. McDonogh even beat Mount Saint Joseph High School, which was the top team in their league.

Before his second year, Delaney moved to Towson Catholic High School. He continued to play basketball there under coach Josh Pratt. He joined other talented players like Donté Greene on the team.

In his senior year, Delaney was amazing. He scored about 20 points per game. He also got four rebounds and four steals per game. He played in important all-star games like the Nike All-American All-Star game. He was also named the Baltimore Catholic League Player of the Year. Delaney led Towson Catholic to win both the Baltimore Catholic League and MIAA Championships in his senior year. He scored a total of 2,112 points during his high school career.

Experts ranked Delaney as one of the best players in the country. He received offers from many colleges, including Virginia Tech and Maryland. He also played for an AAU team called Team Melo. He was friends with famous NBA player Carmelo Anthony. Delaney decided to play for Virginia Tech in September 2006.

Freshman Year (2007–2008)

In his first year at Virginia Tech, Delaney was a key player. He was second on the team in assists, helping his teammates score. He also scored about 9.6 points per game. He played in all 35 games and started the last 24. He scored over 10 points in all three of Virginia Tech's postseason games. He even scored a career-high 20 points against UNC.

Sophomore Year (2008–2009)

In his second year, Delaney became even better. He was named to the third-team All-ACC, which means he was one of the best players in his college conference. He scored more than 20 points in 12 games. He averaged 18.2 points per game, making him second on his team in scoring. He was also among the top players in the ACC for assists and free throw shooting. He won the Lou Carnesecca Award for being the most valuable player at the Aeropostale Holiday Festival tournament.

Junior Year (2009–2010)

Delaney had an amazing junior year. He was chosen for the first-team All-ACC by everyone who voted. This showed he was one of the top players in the entire conference. He scored a career-best 20.2 points per game. He helped his team reach the quarterfinals of the NIT. He was also recognized as a fourth-team All-America player by Sporting News.

Professional Career Highlights

Élan Chalon (2011–2012)

After college, Delaney was not chosen in the NBA draft. But he quickly signed with a French team called Élan Chalon. This team plays in France's top basketball league. In his very first professional game, Delaney scored 12 points and had 8 assists. Later, he had a fantastic game with 30 points and 10 assists.

Budivelnyk Kyiv (2012–2013)

In 2012, Malcolm Delaney moved to Ukraine to play for BC Budivelnyk in Kyiv. The team plays in the Ukrainian Basketball SuperLeague. He was named to the All-EuroCup First Team in 2013. This award goes to the best players in the EuroCup tournament.

Bayern Munich (2013–2014)

In 2013, Delaney signed a one-year contract with the German team Bayern Munich. In April 2014, Delaney won the Basketball Bundesliga MVP award, meaning he was the most valuable player in the German league. Bayern Munich won the German League title that year. Delaney also won the Finals MVP award for his great performance in the championship games.

Lokomotiv Kuban (2014–2016)

On July 2, 2014, Delaney signed with the Russian team PBC Lokomotiv Kuban. He said the team really wanted him to join. He also mentioned he had heard only good things about them.

In 2015, he signed again with Lokomotiv for another season. He helped his team reach the 2016 EuroLeague Final Four, which is the final stage of Europe's biggest basketball competition. Lokomotiv finished in third place. Delaney played very well, averaging 16.3 points and 5.5 assists per game in the EuroLeague.

Atlanta Hawks (2016–2018)

On July 15, 2016, Delaney signed a two-year contract with the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA. This was a big step, as he was now playing in the top basketball league in the world. He made his NBA debut on October 27, 2016. He scored four points and had five assists in that game.

Guangdong Southern Tigers (2018–2019)

On July 28, 2018, Delaney signed with the Guangdong Southern Tigers in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). In his first game with the team, he scored 19 points, got 5 rebounds, and had 3 assists.

FC Barcelona (2019–2020)

On September 12, 2019, Delaney signed a one-year deal with FC Barcelona, a very strong team in Spain and the EuroLeague. In his first game with Barcelona, Delaney scored 8 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, and gave 6 assists. He averaged 10.2 points and 3.7 assists per game during his time there. In May 2020, he left FC Barcelona.

Olimpia Milano (2020–2022)

On June 2, 2020, Delaney signed a two-year contract with Olimpia Milano in Italy. This team plays in the Italian League. In October, he had to take a break from playing because of an ankle injury. On May 12, 2022, Delaney and Olimpia Milano decided to end his contract. He had already suffered another injury that ended his season. After this, he said that the 2022 season would be his last playing for any European basketball team.
