Archie Turner's Life Story
Archie Turner was born in Detroit, Michigan. His father passed away when Archie was very young. He got the nickname "Hubbie" when he was a child. Archie and his brother Horace moved to Memphis to live with their grandmother.
Early Music Lessons
Archie started taking piano lessons. Later, he lived with his mother and her second husband, who was also a musician named Willie Mitchell. Archie went to a Catholic high school in Memphis. There, he met two brothers, Teenie and Leroy Hodges.
Forming The Impalas
Archie, his brother Horace, and the Hodges brothers soon formed a band called The Impalas. Archie played keyboards, Horace played drums, and the Hodges brothers played guitar and bass. They performed in local clubs and at parties. Sometimes, they even filled in for Willie Mitchell's own band!
College and Army Service
After finishing high school in 1964, Archie went to Memphis State College. He continued to play with The Impalas. He also sometimes recorded music as a session musician, meaning he played for other artists' recordings.
In 1968, Archie joined the US Army. He first formed a band at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Then, he was sent to Vietnam as part of an infantry unit. Even there, he formed a band! He was even named "Entertainer of the Year" in Vietnam by Stars and Stripes magazine in 1969.
Returning to Music
Archie came back to Memphis in 1970. He went back to college and changed his main subject to Psychology. He also started a new rock band called Blackrock. The band included Cornell McFadden on drums, Curke Dudley on bass, and Willie Pettis on guitar.
They recorded one song called "Blackrock, Yeah, Yeah." Later, Larry Lee joined the band, replacing Willie Pettis. Blackrock traveled to California to audition for a famous music promoter, Bill Graham. However, nothing came from that meeting, and the band broke up in 1971. Years later, in 2014, the song "Blackrock, Yeah, Yeah" was used in a new way by the band The Roots on their album ...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin.
Joining Hi Rhythm Section
After Blackrock, Archie Turner joined the Hodges brothers in the famous Hi Rhythm Section. Over the next few years, he recorded music with many well-known artists. These included Al Green, Syl Johnson, Ann Peebles, and Otis Clay.
Archie also wrote two songs for Paul Butterfield's 1981 album, North-South. He then formed another band called Quo Jr. with Roland Robinson and Brad Webb.
Touring and New Bands
During the 1980s, Archie played in bands for other famous musicians. He played with Little Milton, Bobby 'Blue' Bland, and Albert King. While playing with Albert King, he met guitarist Emmanuel Gales, who later became known as Little Jimmy King.
Archie and Little Jimmy King then formed a band called the Memphis Soul Survivors. This band became the main band at B. B. King's Blues Club on Beale Street. They recorded several albums together.
