Archie "Hubbie" Turner (born January 25, 1946) is a talented American keyboard player and songwriter. He is famous for being part of the Hi Rhythm Section in Memphis, Tennessee. Archie has played on more than forty albums, making music for many well-known artists. He is sometimes known as "Hubbie" Mitchell.

Early Life and First Bands

Archie Turner was born in Detroit, Michigan. He moved to Memphis with his brother Horace. There, they lived with their grandmother. Archie started taking piano lessons. Later, he lived with his mother and her second husband. His stepfather was the musician Willie Mitchell.

In high school, Archie met brothers Teenie and Leroy Hodges. They quickly formed a band called the Impalas. Archie played keyboards, Horace played drums. The Hodges brothers played guitar and bass. They performed in local clubs and at parties. Sometimes, they even filled in for Willie Mitchell's own band.

After high school in 1964, Archie went to Memphis State College. He kept playing with the Impalas. He also sometimes recorded music as a session musician. A session musician is someone who plays on recordings for other artists.

Music and Service

In 1968, Archie joined the US Army. He first formed a band at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Later, he served in Vietnam. Even there, he formed a band. In 1969, he was named "Entertainer of the Year in Vietnam" by Stars and Stripes magazine.

Archie returned to Memphis in 1970. He went back to college, studying Psychology. He also started a new rock band called Blackrock. They recorded one song, "Blackrock, Yeah, Yeah." This song was later used in a new song by the group The Roots in 2014. This is called sampling.

Joining the Hi Rhythm Section

After Blackrock, Turner joined the Hodges brothers in the Hi Rhythm Section. This group became very famous. They recorded with many great artists. These included Al Green, Syl Johnson, and Ann Peebles. He also wrote two songs for Paul Butterfield's album North-South.

During the 1980s, Archie played with other famous musicians. He toured Europe with Bobby 'Blue' Bland. He also played with Albert King. With guitarist Emmanuel Gales, also known as Little Jimmy King, Archie formed the Memphis Soul Survivors. This band became the main band at B. B. King's Blues Club on Beale Street. They recorded several albums.

Recent Years

In 2008, Turner joined The Bo-Keys in Memphis. From 2010 to 2012, he toured around the world. He was part of Cyndi Lauper's band. In 2014, he toured again with the Hi Rhythm Section. This time, they backed singer Paul Rodgers.

In 2010, Archie Turner received a W. C. Handy Heritage Award. This award honors people who have made important contributions to blues music. He continues to perform with the Hi Rhythm Section and The Bo-Keys. He has also played with other musicians, including Stevie Ray Vaughan.
