Ardmore (which means "Big Point" in Scottish Gaelic) is a small village. You can find it on the northeast side of the Isle of Barra. This island is part of the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. Ardmore is known for its important ferry port.
Ardmore: Gateway to the Isles
Ardmore is a quiet village. It plays a key role in connecting the islands. Its ferry port helps people travel between Barra and other nearby places.
Connecting the Islands
In 2002, a new ferry port was built in Ardmore. This port was part of a big plan. The plan was to improve transport across the Sound of Barra. The ferry service started in the spring of 2003. It connects Barra with the island of Eriskay.
Before the ferry, a causeway was built. A causeway is like a raised road over water. This causeway linked Eriskay to South Uist. So, the ferry and causeway together make travel easier.
The Ferry Service
The ferry that serves Ardmore is called the MV Loch Alainn. It offers daily trips. The journey across the water takes about 40 minutes. Since 2016, this ferry has been the only way to travel between Barra and South Uist by sea. This happened after another ferry service stopped.
Sometimes, maps might show the port in a slightly different spot. But the correct location for the ferry port is right here in Ardmore.
