History of Ardmore

Ardmore started in 1911 as a stop along a railroad line. It was first called "Austin." This name came from Alex Austin, a store owner who helped the workers building the railroad. The railroad was the L&N Railroad, which connected Nashville, Tennessee, and Decatur, Alabama.

In 1914, the L&N Railroad opened a train station in the town. They decided to change the town's name to "Ardmore." This new name was probably inspired by a place called Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Ardmore, Tennessee, officially became a city in 1949.

Geography and Location

Ardmore is located in the southern part of Tennessee. It sits right on the border with Alabama. The city is mainly found along Tennessee State Route 7, which is also called Main Street. This road runs along the state line.

Ardmore is split between two counties. Most of its businesses are in Giles County. However, some eastern parts of the city are in Lincoln County. The Elk River flows to the northwest of Ardmore. The city covers about 4.7 square miles (12.2 square kilometers) of land and a very small amount of water.
