Ardmore is a city in Tennessee, United States. It is located in both Giles and Lincoln counties. In 2020, about 1,217 people lived there. Ardmore is also home to a Welcome Center for tourists visiting Tennessee. It shares a border with its sister city, Ardmore, Alabama.
History of Ardmore
Ardmore started in 1911 as a stop along a railroad line. It was first called "Austin." This name came from Alex Austin, a store owner who helped the workers building the railroad. The railroad was the L&N Railroad, which connected Nashville, Tennessee, and Decatur, Alabama.
In 1914, the L&N Railroad opened a train station in the town. They decided to change the town's name to "Ardmore." This new name was probably inspired by a place called Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Ardmore, Tennessee, officially became a city in 1949.
Geography and Location
Ardmore is located in the southern part of Tennessee. It sits right on the border with Alabama. The city is mainly found along Tennessee State Route 7, which is also called Main Street. This road runs along the state line.
Ardmore is split between two counties. Most of its businesses are in Giles County. However, some eastern parts of the city are in Lincoln County. The Elk River flows to the northwest of Ardmore. The city covers about 4.7 square miles (12.2 square kilometers) of land and a very small amount of water.
Ardmore's Climate
Ardmore has a climate typical of the southeastern United States. This means it experiences warm summers and mild winters. The weather can change throughout the year, bringing different temperatures and rainfall.
