Aristarchus of Samothrace (born around 220 BC, died around 143 BC) was a very important ancient Greek scholar. He was known as a top expert on the famous Greek poet Homer. Aristarchus worked as the main librarian at the amazing Library of Alexandria. He took over this important job from his teacher, Aristophanes of Byzantium.

Aristarchus's Life Story

Aristarchus left his home island of Samothrace when he was young. He traveled to Alexandria, a big city in ancient Egypt. There, he studied with the director of the famous library.

Later, Aristarchus became a teacher at the royal court. From 153 BC to 145 BC, he was the director of the Library of Alexandria. He had to leave Alexandria because of problems with the ruler, Ptolemy VIII. Aristarchus found safety in Cyprus, an island, where he later died.

People said that Aristarchus had an amazing memory. They also mentioned that he didn't care much about how he looked. His death happened during a difficult time under Ptolemy VIII. One story says he became very ill and chose to end his life while in exile on Cyprus.

What Aristarchus Achieved

His Work on Homer's Poems

Aristarchus created a very important version of Homer's poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey. He carefully checked the words and how they sounded. He even added special marks to the text to show how words should be pronounced.

He was very strict about which lines were truly Homer's. If he doubted a line, he would remove it. This made him famous for being a tough critic. It's also believed that he, or another scholar before him, divided the Iliad and Odyssey into 24 books each.

Other Writings and Studies

Aristarchus wrote many books, possibly as many as 800! These books were about different writers and topics. Sadly, almost all of his writings are now lost. We only know about them from small pieces saved by other scholars. His works covered writers like Alcaeus, Anacreon, Pindar, Hesiod, and famous ancient Greek playwriters.

How He Changed Punctuation

Aristarchus also improved the system of special signs used in ancient Greek texts. These signs helped people understand the meaning of the words better. Because of his work, these signs became known as Aristarchian symbols.

His name is so connected to judging and improving texts that the word aristarch is sometimes used for someone who is a very critical judge.
