Arizmendi Bakery is a group of bakeries found in the San Francisco Bay Area in California, United States. You can find their bakeries in cities like San Francisco, Berkeley, Emeryville, San Rafael, and Oakland.
These bakeries are special because they are all worker cooperatives. This means that the people who work there also own and manage the business together. Each bakery runs on its own, but they all share similar recipes and products.
Arizmendi Bakery started in 1997. The first location opened in Oakland. The idea for Arizmendi came from another cooperative called the Cheese Board Collective. The bakeries were named after José María Arizmendiarrieta. He was a priest and a leader from the Basque region who helped workers organize.
Arizmendi bakeries are known for their tasty treats. They make delicious pastries, fresh pizza, and different kinds of bread. In 2011, a newspaper called the East Bay Express voted Arizmendi the best bakery in the East Bay area. A food writer named Tamara Palmer once said that their "Auntie Mabel's Kookie Brittle" was the best cookie in San Francisco. They also bake fruitcakes, using dried fruits from a local store called the Rainbow Grocery Cooperative. In December 2011, the San Francisco bakery sold about 400 fruitcakes every day!
