History of Arkadelphia
Arkadelphia was settled a long time ago, in the 1800s. It even got its own post office in 1854. When it was first established, Arkadelphia was located within Blount County, Alabama.
What's in a Name?
The name "Arkadelphia" has an interesting story, but no one is completely sure how it came about.
- Some people think it was named after the wife of the first postmaster, John A. Donaldson.
- Others believe the name is a mix of two parts: "Ark-" from an early settlement nearby, and "-adelphia." The "-adelphia" part means "brother-place" in a way, similar to how Philadelphia, Pennsylvania got its name.
- It's important to know that Arkadelphia, Alabama, is not connected to the city of Arkadelphia, Arkansas. That city was founded much earlier.
Around the year 1900, the county lines were changed. This moved Arkadelphia from Blount County into Cullman County, where it is today.
Notable People and Location
A famous railroad engineer named J.E. Willoughby was born in Arkadelphia in 1871. Today, you can find Arkadelphia along Alabama State Route 91.
Population Changes
Arkadelphia first appeared in the U.S. Census in 1880 as a small village. At that time, it was the second-largest community in Blount County. After 1880, the village itself didn't appear in the census again. However, the larger area around it, known as the Arkadelphia Precinct, continued to be counted.
Arkadelphia Precinct
The Arkadelphia Precinct was counted in the census from 1890 to 1950. It started in Blount County and then moved to Cullman County after the county lines changed around 1900. The population of this precinct changed over the years:
- In 1890, about 1,173 people lived there.
- By 1950, the population was around 944.
In 1960, the Arkadelphia Precinct was combined with other areas into a larger census division called Bremen, Alabama.
