Arkansaw (pronounced AR-kən-saw) is a small community in Pepin County, Wisconsin, United States. It is known as an "unincorporated census-designated place." This means it's a recognized area where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger town of Waterville.

Arkansaw is located about 3 miles west of Durand. Its ZIP code is 54721. In 2010, about 177 people lived there. For a few years, from 1881 to 1886, Arkansaw was the "county seat" of Pepin County. A county seat is the main town where the county government offices are located.

History of Arkansaw

Arkansaw was started in the early 1850s. It was built near a place where people could cross Arkansaw Creek. This creek is a smaller stream that flows into the Eau Galle River.

Early Industry: Lumber

The community first grew because of the lumber industry. The very first sawmill in Arkansaw opened in 1852. Sawmills are places where logs are cut into lumber.

Arkansaw Creek and Floods

The community was originally built close to three dams on Arkansaw Creek. These dams were all within a mile of each other. However, a big flood in 1907 destroyed all three dams. Arkansaw Creek was named after the Arkansas River. Today, the creek flows through Arkansaw Creek Park.
