Arman Kirakossian (Armenian: Արման Կիրակոսյան; born September 10, 1956 – died July 6, 2019) was an important Armenian diplomat and historian. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. They work to build good relationships and solve problems peacefully. Kirakossian served his country in many important roles. These included being an ambassador to several countries and even acting as Armenia's Foreign Minister for a short time.

Arman Kirakossian's Life Story
Early Life and Education
Arman Kirakossian was born in Yerevan, Armenia. His father, John Kirakosyan, was also a well-known historian and political scientist. Arman studied History and Geography at the Armenian State Pedagogical University. He earned his first degree in 1977. Later, in 1980, he completed a master's degree focusing on Armenian history and international diplomacy. In 1999, he earned a Doctor of Sciences degree in History. This was from the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.
Starting a Diplomatic Career
Before becoming a diplomat, Kirakossian worked in academic roles. He held several important positions at the National Academy of Sciences. From 1980 to 1986, he was a Project Director. He then became a Senior Fellow from 1990 to 1991.
In 1991, he began his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia. He quickly rose through the ranks. From 1991 to 1994, he served as the First Deputy Foreign Minister. For a few months, from October 1992 to February 1993, he even served as the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs. This meant he was in charge of Armenia's foreign relations. In 1992, he was given the high diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.
Serving as an Ambassador
Kirakossian represented Armenia in many countries around the world.
Ambassador to Greece
From 1994 to 1999, Arman Kirakossian was Armenia's Ambassador to Greece. During this time, he also took on extra duties. He became the Dean of Diplomatic Corps in Athens. This meant he was the most senior ambassador in Greece. He also represented Armenia in other nearby countries. These included Cyprus, Slovenia, Croatia, Albania, and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
Ambassador to the United States
From 1999 to 2005, Kirakossian served as the Armenian Ambassador to the United States. This was a very important role. While in the U.S., he also became Armenia's Permanent Observer to the Organization of American States starting in 2001.
Return to the Foreign Ministry
In 2005, he was appointed again as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia. This meant he returned to a leadership role within the ministry in Armenia.
Ambassador to Austria and the UK
In 2011, Kirakossian became the Ambassador to Austria. He also represented Armenia at the OSCE in Vienna. The OSCE is an organization that works for security and cooperation in Europe. In November 2018, he was appointed Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Arman Kirakossian passed away in Yerevan on July 6, 2019.
Awards and Recognition
Arman Kirakossian received several awards for his important work.
- In 1999, he was given the Gold Medal of the City of Athens.
- He received a Commemorative Medal in 2001.
- In 2009, he was awarded the "John Kirakossian" Medal from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia. This medal was named after his father.
- The Yerevan State University gave him a Gold Medal in 2006.
- He also received the State Medal of Mkhitar Gosh. This award is for significant services in the field of diplomacy.
