Aron Winter's Football Journey
Playing for Clubs
Aron Winter started his football journey at a young age. He played for amateur clubs like VV Unicum and SV Lelystad. Then, at 19, he joined the famous Ajax team.
Early Days at Ajax
His first game for Ajax was on April 6, 1986. Ajax won that game 3–0 against FC Utrecht. During his time at Ajax, Winter helped the team win many important trophies.
- He won the KNVB Cup twice (in 1987 and 1988).
- He helped Ajax win the Eredivisie league title in 1990.
- He also won two European trophies: the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1987 and the UEFA Cup in 1992.
Playing in Italy
In 1992, Aron Winter moved to Italy to play for Lazio. His first match for Lazio was on September 6, 1992. That game ended in a 3–3 tie against Sampdoria.
After four years with Lazio, Winter joined another big Italian club, Inter Milan, in 1996. With Inter, he won the UEFA Cup in 1998. He had played in the final the year before, but Inter lost that game on penalties. Winter unfortunately missed his penalty kick.
Back to Ajax and Sparta Rotterdam
In 1999, Winter returned to his former club, Ajax. In 2001, he was loaned to Sparta Rotterdam. He played 32 games for Sparta Rotterdam and scored one goal. After that, he went back to Ajax. He finished his playing career there and retired in 2003.
International Games
Aron Winter was a key player for the Netherlands. He was part of the team that won the 1988 European Football Championship. However, he did not play in the final matches of that tournament.
He played in the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. The Netherlands team lost in the round of 16 against Germany. In the 1994 FIFA World Cup, Winter scored a goal against Brazil in the quarter-finals. This made him the only player of Indian descent to score in a World Cup.
Winter also played for the Netherlands in Euro 96. He was also part of the team for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. His last major tournament was Euro 2000.
He played for his country 84 times and scored 6 goals. This makes him one of the most capped players for the Netherlands national team.
Life as a Coach
After his playing career, Aron Winter became a football coach. He started as an assistant coach for the Ajax academy team.
Coaching Toronto FC
In 2011, Winter signed a three-year contract with Toronto FC, a Canadian team. He brought his former colleague, Bob de Klerk, as his assistant. Winter won his first game as Toronto's coach against Portland Timbers.
He won his first trophy with Toronto in July 2011. Toronto beat Vancouver to win the Canadian Championship. This win allowed them to play in the 2011–12 CONCACAF Champions League. Winter led Toronto to the Champions League semifinals. This was the first time a Canadian club reached that stage. Toronto eventually lost to Santos Laguna.
However, the 2012 MLS season started tough for Toronto. They lost their first nine games. This was the worst start in MLS history. Toronto won their tenth match, but it wasn't enough. Winter was replaced by Paul Mariner in June 2012.
Coaching Suriname
On September 6, 2022, Winter became the interim coach for the Suriname team. He took over from Stanley Menzo. Winter coached Suriname in a friendly match against Nicaragua.
Personal Life
Aron Winter was born in Paramaribo, Suriname. His cousin, Ricardo Winter, was also a football player and manager. Ricardo also coached the Suriname national football team.
