A Look at Aroney's History
The first post office in Aroney opened a long time ago, in 1890. However, it doesn't exist anymore. Interestingly, the community's name was once spelled wrong on some maps. In 1966, the USGS maps accidentally wrote "Arona" instead of "Aroney." This mistake was copied onto many other maps and databases. Even today, the USGS still uses "Arona" as the main spelling, though they know "Aroney" is also used. But if you check the USGS database for post offices, it correctly lists "Aroney."
Life and People in Aroney
For a long time, the people living in Aroney were mostly farmers. In the 1950s and 1960s, they grew a lot of cotton. But as time went on, it became too expensive to grow cotton. So, the farmers changed what they grew. They started planting other crops like soybeans and corn instead. Many farmers also began raising cattle. They fenced in their fields to keep the cows.
Aroney never grew very big. It never even needed a traffic light! For a while, there was a flashing light, then a four-way stop sign, and now it's just a regular road. Until about 20 years ago, most people in Aroney were related to each other in some way.
The Center Point Junior High School
Aroney was never big enough to have its own school system. But there was a small school called Center Point Junior High School. It taught students from first to ninth grade. Over time, it changed to only teach grades one through six. The school finally closed its doors in 1976. Today, all that's left of the old school are the front doorsteps and the lunchroom building.
