History
The Autun arrondissement was created on February 17, 1800. It was one of the first parts of the Saône-et-Loire department.
Geography
The Autun arrondissement is in the northern part of its department. It shares borders with the Côte-d'Or department to the north. To the east, it borders the Chalon-sur-Saône district. To the south, it borders the Charolles district. Finally, to the west, it borders the Nièvre department.
This district covers about 1,900 square kilometers (734 square miles). This makes it the second largest district in the Saône-et-Loire department. In 2014, about 86,693 people lived here. This means there were about 45 people for every square kilometer.
