A Look at Avignon's History
The Avignon arrondissement has been around for a long time. It was first created in 1793. This was when the Vaucluse department itself was formed. So, the arrondissement of Avignon was one of the original parts of this new department.
Where is Avignon?
The Avignon arrondissement is in the northwest part of the Vaucluse department. It has an interesting feature called an exclave. This means a small part of it, the area around Valréas, is completely surrounded by another department, Drôme.
The arrondissement shares borders with several other areas:
- To the east, it's next to the Carpentras arrondissement.
- To the southeast, you'll find the Apt arrondissement.
- The Bouches-du-Rhône department is to the south.
- To the west, it borders the Gard department.
- The Ardèche department is to the northwest.
- And finally, the Drôme department is to the north.
Even though it's the smallest arrondissement in Vaucluse by land size (about 923.7 square kilometers), it's the most populated! Many people live here. In 2014, about 296,303 people called it home. This means it has a high population density, with around 321 people living in each square kilometer.
What Makes Up Avignon?
The Avignon arrondissement is made up of smaller areas called communes. Think of communes as towns or villages.
