History of Jonzac Arrondissement
The Jonzac arrondissement was created in 1800. Before that, when the Charente-Maritime department was first formed in 1790, Jonzac wasn't one of its main divisions. However, it quickly became an important area. It was formed by combining parts of the old Monlieu and Pons districts.
Geography of Jonzac Arrondissement
The Jonzac arrondissement covers an area of about 1,530 square kilometers (about 590 square miles). In 2014, around 57,000 people lived here. This means there were about 37 people living in each square kilometer.
Jonzac is the southernmost arrondissement in its department. It shares borders with other areas:
- To the north, it borders the Saintes arrondissement.
- To the east, it borders the Charente department.
- To the southeast and east, it borders the Gironde department.
