History of Saintes Arrondissement
The Saintes arrondissement was created a long time ago, in 1790. It was one of the first areas to be part of the new Charente-Maritime department. This region was historically known as the old province of Saintonge.

The Saintes arrondissement is the largest district in the Charente-Maritime department when you look at its size. It covers about 1,546.5 square kilometers. To give you an idea, that's roughly 597 square miles.

Saintes is located in the central part of the Charente-Maritime department. It shares borders with several other areas:
- To the north, it borders the Saint-Jean-d'Angély arrondissement.
- To the east, it borders the Cognac arrondissement, which is in the Charente department.
- To the south, it borders the Jonzac arrondissement.
- To the southwest, it touches the Gironde department through the Gironde estuary.
