History of Lesparre-Médoc Arrondissement
The Gironde department was created a long time ago, on 17 February 1800. The arrondissement of Lesparre-Médoc was one of the first parts of this new department. Back then, it was simply called the Arrondissement of Lesparre.
Later, in September 1926, this arrondissement was temporarily closed down. But don't worry, it came back! In June 1942, it was re-established. This time, it got its current name: the Arrondissement of Lesparre-Médoc.
Geography of Lesparre-Médoc Arrondissement
The arrondissement of Lesparre-Médoc is located in the northwest part of the Gironde department. It covers a large area of about 2,274.4 km2 (878 sq mi). This makes it the second biggest arrondissement in the department. Only the Langon arrondissement is larger.
In 2014, about 86,560 people lived here. This means the area has a population density of about 38.1 people per square kilometer.
This arrondissement shares its borders with several other places. To the north, it touches the Charente-Maritime department. To the east, you'll find the arrondissements of Blaye. To the southeast, it borders the arrondissement of Bordeaux. To the south, it's next to the arrondissement of Arcachon. And to the west, it meets the Atlantic Ocean, specifically the Bay of Biscay.
