History of Montbard Arrondissement
The Montbard Arrondissement wasn't always around. When the Côte-d'Or department was first created in 1800, Montbard was not one of its original districts.
This arrondissement was officially formed much later, in 1926. It was created by combining two smaller areas: the arrondissements of Châtillon-sur-Seine and Semur-en-Auxois.
Geography of Montbard Arrondissement
The Montbard Arrondissement is the largest area within its department. It covers about 3,595.9 square kilometers (1,388.4 square miles).
Even though it's the biggest in size, it has the fewest people. In 2014, about 60,699 people lived here. This means it has a population density of about 16.9 people per square kilometer.
The Montbard Arrondissement shares its borders with several other areas:
- To the north, it touches the Aube and Haute-Marne departments.
- To the east, it borders the Dijon Arrondissement.
- To the south, it's next to the Beaune Arrondissement.
- To the southwest, it meets the Nièvre department.
- To the west, it borders the Yonne department.
How Montbard Arrondissement is Organized
French arrondissements are divided into smaller areas called cantons. These cantons are used for elections and local administration.
