History of Saint-Dizier Arrondissement
The Saint-Dizier arrondissement has an interesting past. When the Haute-Marne department was first created in 1800, Saint-Dizier was already a part of it.
Later, in 1800, the main office, called the subprefecture, was moved to a town named Wassy. But things changed again! On September 10, 1926, the Wassy arrondissement was closed down. Then, in 1940, Wassy became an arrondissement again. However, the subprefecture was moved back to Saint-Dizier.
Geography of Saint-Dizier
The Saint-Dizier arrondissement is the most northern part of the Haute-Marne department. It shares borders with several other departments. To the north and east, it borders the Meuse department. To the southeast, it borders the Vosges department.
To the south, you'll find the Arrondissement of Chaumont. To the west, it borders the Aube department. Finally, to the northwest, it borders the Marne department.
This arrondissement is the smallest in the Haute-Marne department by size. It covers an area of about 1,571.4 square kilometers (606.7 square miles). However, it has the most people living in it! In 2014, about 71,371 people lived here. This means it has a population density of about 45.4 people per square kilometer.
