The arrondissement of Tarbes is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region. Its capital, and of the department, is the city of Tarbes.
History
When the Hautes-Pyrénées department was created on 17 February 1800, the arrondissement of Tarbes was part of that original department and was made the capital (préfecture) of it.
Geography
It is the most northern of the arrondissements of the department, with an area of 1,488.1 km2 (575 sq mi), the second in area of the department. It is the most populated arrondissement with 143,753 inhabitants and a population density of 96.6 inhabitants/km².
The arrondissement of Tarbes is bordered to the north by the Gers department, to the east by the Haute-Garonne department, to the south arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre, to the southwest by the arrondissement of Argelès-Gazost and to west by the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department.
