Arsenicker Keys facts for kids
The Arsenicker Keys are a group of small islands located in southern Florida, United States. You might also hear them called the Arsnicker Keys. The name "Arsenicker" actually comes from "Marsh sneaker." This was a name used by Bahamians for the Great Blue Heron, a tall bird often seen in marshy areas.
Islands in Biscayne Bay
One group of Arsenicker Keys is found at the southern end of Biscayne Bay in Miami-Dade County. These islands are part of the beautiful Biscayne National Park. This park helps protect the islands and the waters around them.
This group includes several islands:
- Arsenicker Key (25°23′50″N 80°17′11″W / 25.3971°N 80.2864°W). This island used to be known as North Arsnicker Key.
- East Arsenicker Key (25°22′33″N 80°17′18″W / 25.3759°N 80.2884°W).
- Long Arsenicker Key (25°22′49″N 80°17′43″W / 25.3804°N 80.2953°W).
- West Arsenicker Key (25°24′19″N 80°18′06″W / 25.4053°N 80.3017°W).
Islands in Florida Bay
There are two other groups of Arsenicker Keys located in Florida Bay, which is part of Monroe County.
Upper Arsnicker Keys
The Upper Arsnicker Keys (25°33′19″N 80°29′38″W / 25.5553°N 80.4940°W) are about seven miles north of Long Key. Long Key is one of the many islands that make up the Florida Keys. In the 1700s, this group of islands was known by a different name: the Cooper Islands. This group includes an island called Center Key.
Lower Arsnicker Keys
The Lower Arsnicker Keys (24°33′05″N 80°29′37″W / 24.5514°N 80.4936°W) are another group of islands also found in Florida Bay.
