History of Arthur Village
Arthur was started in 1913. It was meant to be the main town for Arthur County, which was just being formed. Both the town and the county were named after a former US President, Chester A. Arthur. Arthur officially became a village in 1944.
When the county was new, the first county office was actually a covered wagon! A proper one-room courthouse was built in 1915. Before that, in 1914, a general store opened. Soon after, a newspaper, the first church, and a post office were also set up. A one-room high school was built in 1914 and grew to two rooms by 1920. The Arthur State Bank opened in 1916.
Arthur continued to grow in the 1920s. The town got electricity in 1926. However, most of the surrounding county did not have electricity until the early 1950s.
Arthur During the Great Depression
In 1932, the Great Depression affected Arthur. The town's bank closed down. A new financial group, the Arthur County Co-op Credit Association, took its place in 1939.
After World War II, in 1950, a new, modern high school was finished. A new courthouse was built between 1960 and 1961. By 1980, the population of Arthur was 125 people.
Historic Buildings in Arthur
Two special places in Arthur are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical sites.
- The Pilgrim Holiness Church was built in 1928. It's unique because it was made from straw bales! This was a clever idea because there weren't many trees or much building sod in the area.
- The First Arthur County Courthouse and Jail complex was built in 1914-1915. The courthouse is known as the smallest ever built in the United States.
Today, the Arthur County Historical Society takes care of both of these historic sites.
Geography and Climate
Arthur is a small village. According to the United States Census Bureau, it covers about 0.31 square miles (0.80 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
Arthur's Weather Patterns
Arthur has a type of weather called a humid continental climate. This means it has warm summers and cold winters. Sometimes, very cold air from the Arctic can make winters frigid. Other times, warm winds from the Rocky Mountains, called chinook winds, can make winter afternoons surprisingly warm.
In winter, you can expect many mornings to be below freezing. Snowfall is usually moderate because the air is often dry. Spring weather can change quickly, warming up but also having freezing mornings late into May.
Most of the rain falls in late spring and summer. This often happens during thunderstorms. Sometimes, during dry periods, Arthur can experience heatwaves and droughts. For example, in 1936, the temperature reached 113°F (45°C).
