Thomas Arthur Darvill (born 17 June 1982) is a talented English actor, composer, and musician. He is best known for playing Rory Williams, a loyal friend of the Eleventh Doctor in the TV show Doctor Who (from 2010 to 2012). He also played Rip Hunter in Legends of Tomorrow (from 2016 to 2018, and again in 2021). Another important role was Rev. Paul Coates in the drama Broadchurch (from 2013 to 2017). From 2013 to 2014, he starred in the musical Once in London's West End and on Broadway. He also won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role as Curley in the musical Oklahoma!.

Early Life
Arthur Darvill was born in Birmingham, England, on June 17, 1982. His mother, Ellie, was an actress who worked with puppets and masks. She even toured the world! She was also the puppeteer and voice for Why Bird from the TV show Playdays. His father, Nigel, played the Hammond organ for famous musicians like Edwin Starr and UB40. Arthur went to Bromsgrove School in Worcestershire from 1993 to 2000.
Arthur's Career
Starting Out in Acting
Arthur Darvill joined the Stage2 Youth Theatre Company when he was just 10 years old. He was part of the group from 1991 to 2000. In 2000, he had an early job on CITV, introducing shows. Back then, he was known as Tom Darvill.
In 2001, he started his own theatre company called Fuego's Men. They performed plays in the Midlands area. When he was 21, Arthur moved to London with four friends. They all got into drama schools, and Arthur trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He also learned stage combat, which is how actors safely fight on stage.
Arthur's first professional stage role was playing Harrison in the play Terre Haute. Critics praised his performance. He was even nominated for a Best Newcomer award at the 2007 Evening Standard Theatre Awards. Later that year, he acted in Swimming with Sharks with Christian Slater and Matt Smith.
TV, Film, and Theatre Roles
In 2008, Arthur Darvill first appeared on TV in the crime drama He Kills Coppers. That same year, he played Edward "Tip" Dorrit in the BBC series Little Dorrit.
He became very well-known for playing Rory Williams in Doctor Who. Rory was a companion to the Eleventh Doctor, played by his friend Matt Smith. Arthur became a regular character in the sixth series and left the show in the fifth episode of the seventh series, along with his on-screen wife, Amy Pond (played by Karen Gillan).
In 2010, Arthur had a small role in Ridley Scott's movie Robin Hood. In 2011, he played Mephistopheles, a devil's agent, in the play Doctor Faustus at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. After leaving Doctor Who, he joined the cast of Broadchurch. He played Reverend Paul Coates alongside David Tennant and Olivia Colman.
On April 19, 2013, Arthur took over the main male role of Guy in the musical Once on Broadway in New York. He performed with Joanna Christie. They even appeared at the 2013 Tony Awards to perform a song. Arthur continued this role in the London West End production in 2014.
In March 2015, Arthur was cast as the time-traveler Rip Hunter in the series Legends of Tomorrow. He left the show in 2018 but returned for its 100th episode in 2021. In 2019, he played Oscar Lindquist in the West End show Sweet Charity. In 2022 and 2023, Arthur starred as Curly McLain in the musical Oklahoma!, winning an award for his performance.
Music and Audio Work
Arthur Darvill is also a talented musician and composer. He has written songs and music for different theatres. He composed the music for Che Walker's play The Frontline at Shakespeare's Globe in 2008. He also worked with Walker on the musicals Been So Long and The Lightning Child.
Arthur has done a lot of voice acting for radio and audiobooks, including Doctor Who stories. In 2011, he played Keith Moon for BBC Radio 4. In 2012, he voiced Gulliver in a Radio 4 version of Gulliver's Travels.
In 2016, he worked on a musical version of Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr. Fox. In 2018, Arthur started a new music group called Paperlands with Ines De Clercq. They performed and recorded music together. In 2020, he appeared on the album for the musical #ZoologicalSociety.
In 2020, it was announced that Arthur would play Rory Williams again for Big Finish Productions. This new audio series, called The Lone Centurion, tells stories about Rory's adventures.
Personal Life
Arthur Darvill plays the guitar and keyboards. When he was a teenager, he formed an indie band called Edmund. The band was named after Edmund Pevensie, his favorite character from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. He enjoys cooking, going to the theatre, and attending concerts. He also collects taxidermy, which is the art of preparing, stuffing, and mounting animal skins. He is good friends with his former Doctor Who co-stars, Karen Gillan and Matt Smith.
In May 2014, Arthur designed and signed a card for a UK charity called Thomas Coram Foundation for Children. The cards were sold to raise money. In 2015, Arthur married Inès De Clercq.
