Arthur Charles Ducat, Sr. (February 24, 1830 – January 29, 1896) was an important officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. After the war, he became a leader in the insurance business and an expert in preventing fires.

Arthur Ducat's Life
Arthur Ducat was born in Kingstown, Ireland, on February 24, 1830. He moved to Illinois in the United States in 1851. In Illinois, he worked as a civil engineer. He also worked as an insurance agent.
Military Service in the Civil War
Ducat started his military career on May 2, 1861. He joined the 12th Illinois Infantry Regiment as a second lieutenant. He quickly moved up in rank. By April 1, 1862, he was a lieutenant colonel.
During the war, he was wounded at the Battle of Fort Donelson in February 1862. After leaving the 12th Illinois Infantry, he became an Inspector General. This job meant he checked how well armies were organized and working. He served in this role for major armies in the western part of the war. He was mainly with the Army of the Cumberland. He left the army on February 19, 1864.
Becoming a Brigadier General
On February 21, 1866, President Andrew Johnson suggested Ducat be given a special military rank. This rank was called a brevet brigadier general. A brevet rank is an honorary promotion. It means you get the title, but not always the higher pay or command. The U.S. Senate approved this on April 10, 1866.
After the War
After the Civil War, Ducat became a very important person in the insurance business in Illinois. He was also known worldwide as an expert in fire prevention. He wrote a famous book on the topic called The Practice of Fire Underwriting. This book helped people understand how to prevent fires.
In 1873, Ducat wrote the rules for the Illinois National Guard. This is a military force for the state of Illinois. He then became its commander, holding the rank of major general.
Arthur Ducat passed away on January 29, 1896, in Downers Grove, Illinois. He was buried in Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois.
