Arthur George Gray (born 1879 – died 18 November 1916) was an English professional golfer. He played golf in the early 1900s. Arthur Gray was a golf professional at the Port Elizabeth Golf Club in South Africa from about 1904 to 1910. During this time, he won the South African Open golf tournament twice, in 1905 and 1906. Sadly, he died during World War I.

Early Life and Family
Arthur Gray was born in a place called Climping, in Sussex, England, in 1879. He learned to play golf at the Littlehampton golf club, which was in the same area.
Arthur came from a family of golfers! Five of his brothers also became professional golfers. His older brother, Ernest, was also very good. Ernest finished tied for 5th place in a major tournament called the 1905 Open Championship.
Golf Career Highlights
Arthur Gray first played in the famous Open Championship in 1899 and 1900. He didn't do very well in these early attempts. At that time, he worked as a golf professional at the Surbiton golf club.
Later, he moved to the Gravesend golf club. In 1903, he played in a big tournament called the first News of the World Matchplay. He did well enough to qualify for the main part of the tournament. He won his first match but then lost to a famous golfer named J.H. Taylor.
Success in South Africa
After this, Arthur Gray moved to South Africa. He became the golf professional at the Port Elizabeth golf club. This was a very successful time for him.
He played in the South African Open every year from 1904 to 1910. He won the tournament two times in a row, in 1905 and 1906. He also finished in second place twice, in 1904 and 1910.
Return to England
Soon after coming back from South Africa, Arthur Gray played in the 1910 Open Championship. He was representing the Littlehampton golf club then.
In 1911, he became the professional at the Colchester golf club. He played in the Open Championship that year but just missed making the cut. In the 1912 Championship, he played well enough to make the cut and finished tied for 48th place.
A Sad End
Arthur Gray joined the army during World War I. He was injured during a very big battle called the Battle of the Somme in France. He sadly died from his injuries on 18 November 1916.
