Arvon Township is a small community in Baraga County, Michigan, in the United States. It's a type of local government area called a civil township. In 2020, about 492 people lived there.
The name "Arvon" comes from a place in Wales called Carnarvon. This area in Wales was famous for its slate industry. Arvon Township also had slate deposits, and there was once a quarry operation here, though it didn't last.
Even though it's called Arvon Township, Mount Arvon is not actually in it! Michigan's highest point, Mount Arvon, is just south of the township in L'Anse Township.

Exploring Arvon Township's Geography
Arvon Township covers a total area of about 340.2 square kilometers (131.4 square miles). Most of this area, 321.1 square kilometers (124.0 square miles), is land. The rest, 19.1 square kilometers (7.4 square miles), is water.
The Abbaye Peninsula and Huron Bay
A cool part of Arvon Township is the Abbaye Peninsula. This piece of land sticks out into Lake Superior. It helps form a long, narrow area called Huron Bay. The bay's waters are much calmer than the open lake.
The shoreline around the tip of the peninsula, called Point Abbaye, is mostly rocky. But you can also find some sandy beaches there.
Nature and Wildlife in Arvon
Much of Arvon Township is covered by forests. These forests have a mix of deciduous trees (which lose their leaves) and coniferous trees (like pines and spruces). You can also find areas with jack pine trees and eastern arborvitae swamps.
In places where people live, there are many wild apple trees. These trees provide a lot of food for deer. Several rivers flow through Arvon Township, including the Huron River. These rivers all flow into Lake Superior.
Because of its beautiful forests and rivers, the main activities in Arvon Township are related to logging and tourism. Many visitors come for hunting and fishing.
Communities in Arvon Township
Arvon Township doesn't have any big cities or towns. Instead, it has several smaller communities and historic spots:
- Arvon: This community was named after the township in 1872. It started as a village for a slate quarry. It even had its own post office for a few years.
- Aura: You can find Aura at the bottom of the Point Abbaye peninsula. It's on the northern side of Huron Bay.
- Huron Bay: This community is located on Huron Bay, a few miles southwest of Skanee. It has a small convenience store and a tavern. Huron Bay was once the end point for a railroad. This railroad, called the Iron Range and Huron Bay Railroad, carried iron ore from Champion to Huron Bay.
- McComb Corner: This is another small, unincorporated community within the township.
- Skanee: Skanee is an unincorporated community and a census-designated place (CDP) in the township. A CDP is a special area the government defines for gathering census data.
- St. Cyr: This is an unincorporated community in the township, also located on Huron Bay.
