Skanee is a small community in Baraga County, Michigan, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" and a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's not a city or town with its own local government.

Skanee is located in Arvon Township. It sits right on the shore of Huron Bay, which is part of Lake Superior. In 2020, about 102 people lived in Skanee. Even though it doesn't have its own government, Skanee has its own post office. The community is also home to the historic Arvon Township Hall.

History of Skanee

Skanee was started in 1870. A man named Captain Walfred Been sailed into Huron Bay during a big storm. He liked the area and decided to settle there.

Captain Been named the new settlement "Skanee" after his home province in Sweden, which is called Skåne. For the 2020 census, Skanee was officially listed as a new census-designated place.

Geography and Location

Skanee is located in the northeastern part of Baraga County. The community covers about 4.83 square miles (12.5 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

Skanee is at the base of the Huron Mountains. These are a smaller mountain range found in both Baraga and Marquette counties. Not far from Skanee, about 8.5 miles (13.7 km) to the southeast, is Mount Arvon. This mountain is the highest point in all of Michigan, standing at 1,979 feet (603 meters) tall. The community's location on Huron Bay, a part of Lake Superior, makes it a scenic spot.
