Ashley Blazer Biden (born June 8, 1981) is an American social worker, activist, and fashion designer. She is known for her work helping communities and for creating a fashion brand that supports good causes. From 2014 to 2019, she was the executive director of the Delaware Center for Justice, an organization that works on improving the justice system. Before that, she worked for the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth, and Their Families.

Ashley also started her own fashion company called Livelihood. This company works with an online store called Gilt Groupe to raise money for programs that help reduce income inequality in the United States. She launched her company at New York Fashion Week in 2017. Ashley's parents are Joe Biden, who was the U.S. President, and Jill Biden, who was the U.S. First Lady.

Early Life and Family

Ashley Blazer Biden was born on June 8, 1981, in Wilmington, Delaware. Her mother, Jill Biden, later became the First Lady of the United States, and her father, Joe Biden, later became the President of the United States. She has three older half-siblings from her father's first marriage: Beau Biden, Hunter Biden, and Naomi Biden.

Ashley grew up following the Catholic faith. She was baptized at St. Joseph's on the Brandywine in Greenville, Delaware. When she was a child, her father was a United States Senator for Delaware, and her mother worked as a teacher.

Ashley went to Wilmington Friends School, a private school in Wilmington. She played on her school's lacrosse and field hockey teams. When she was in elementary school, Ashley found out that a makeup company called Bonne Bell tested its products on animals. She wrote a letter to the company asking them to stop.

Later, she became involved in protecting dolphins. This inspired her father to work with Congresswoman Barbara Boxer to create a law called the 1990 Dolphin Protection Consumer Information Act. Ashley even spoke to members of the United States Congress to help get the law passed.

Education and Career

Ashley Biden studied cultural anthropology (the study of human societies and cultures) at Tulane University. During her first year of college, she worked as a camp counselor at Girls Incorporated, which is now Kingswood Academy. She also worked as an intern at a summer program at Georgetown University, helping young people from Anacostia.

After college, Ashley worked for a few months at a pizza shop in Wilmington. Then, she started her career in social work. She moved to Kensington, Philadelphia, and began working as a clinical support specialist at the Northwestern Human Services Children's Reach Clinic. In this job, she helped young people and their families find important resources and worked closely with doctors and therapists.

In 2010, she earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Social Policy and Practice. She was one of twelve graduates who received the John Hope Franklin Combating American Racism Award for her work.

Social Work and Activism

Ashley Biden is a social justice activist and social worker. After graduate school, she worked at West End Neighborhood House, a non-profit group. There, she helped young people who had been in trouble with the law learn job skills.

For fifteen years, she worked as a social worker for the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth, and Their Families. While working there, Ashley created programs for young people that focused on juvenile justice (the system for young offenders), foster care, and mental health. In 2008, Delaware Today magazine named her one of "40 People to Watch" for her work.

In 2012, she joined the Delaware Center for Justice as an associate director. She focused on making changes to the criminal justice system in Delaware. She helped create and run programs that offered public education, support for crime victims, and help for people leaving prison. In 2014, she became the executive director of the center and stayed in that role until 2019.

She started a program called SWAGG: Student Warriors Against Guns and Gangs. This program helps young people in New Castle County learn about the dangers of violent crime and gang activity. It provides educational materials and support groups in the community.

Ashley also founded the Young@Art program. This program gives young people who are in detention centers a chance to create art. Their artwork is then sold in the community. Half of the money from the sales goes directly to the young artists, and the other half helps fund the program for art supplies and to pay youth who work at the art shows. Through this program, Ashley also teaches students about business and managing money.

Fashion

In 2017, Ashley Biden launched her fashion brand, the Livelihood Collection, at New York Fashion Week. This brand focuses on "ethical fashion," meaning clothes are made in a fair and responsible way. Her parents and famous people like Olivia Palermo and Christian Siriano attended the launch event.

The brand worked with Gilt Groupe and actress Aubrey Plaza to raise $30,000 for the Delaware Community Foundation. The Livelihood logo, which is an arrow going through the letters "LH," was inspired by her half-brother Beau, who passed away in 2015. Ashley said that Beau was like her "bow," and his passing made her determined to keep moving forward and achieve her dreams.

Ashley created the brand to help fight income inequality and racial inequality in the United States. All the money from the brand's launch at New York Fashion Week went to programs for communities in need. Ten percent of the brand's ongoing sales are given to community groups in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and in Riverside, Wilmington.

Livelihood's products are made from organic cotton sourced in America and are manufactured in the United States. Ashley chose to design hoodies because they have a connection to the Labor Movement and are a symbol of social justice movements. The brand's website also provides information about getting involved in your community and economic fairness.

Ashley also designed outfits for 12-inch vinyl dolls of the Peanuts characters Snoopy and Belle. This was for the 2017 Snoopy and Belle in Fashion exhibition. The exhibition started in September 2017 in Manhattan and traveled to other cities before it closed in October 2017.

In June 2020, Ashley designed the uniforms for the staff at the Hamilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., as part of her Livelihood Collection. The hotel donated $15,000 to Livelihood.

Role in Father's Campaign

In August 2020, Ashley Biden spoke at the 2020 Democratic National Convention before her father accepted the nomination to run for President. On August 6, she hosted an event for Wisconsin Women for Biden to talk about her father's campaign plans for women and to raise awareness about women's issues in the 2020 United States presidential election.
