Assis is a city and a municipality in the southwestern part of the state of São Paulo in Brazil. It has a population of about 101,409 people, according to a 2022 estimate. The city covers an area of 460.61 square kilometers.

Assis was founded on July 5, 1905. It became a municipality, which means it gained its own local government, in 1917. This happened when it separated from a nearby town called Platina. Assis is the biggest city in its local area, known as a microregion. It is also the second largest in its larger region, called a mesoregion. The city is located about 434 kilometers away from São Paulo, the state capital.

The city has a warm climate, with an average yearly temperature of about 21.37°C. It receives a good amount of rain, around 1441 millimeters each year. The natural plant life in Assis is a mix of Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest) and Cerrado (a type of savanna). This means it's a special area where different kinds of plants grow.

Assis has a high Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.805. This score shows that people in Assis generally have a good quality of life. It is considered high compared to the rest of the state. Assis ranks 28th among Brazilian cities for its HDI.

The name Assis comes from Captain Assis, who was an explorer in the region. Today, the city of Assis is the main part of the municipality. The nearby town of Tarumã used to be part of Assis but became a separate municipality in 1990.

Assis is known as the Fraternal City. It is also famous for its universities, like UNESP at Assis, FEMA, and Unip. The city has many industries, schools, and a strong economy based on trade and services. It also has a lot of agriculture. Assis is the center of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Assis.

Assis is an important city in its region. It has a great location for different types of farming. The city also has an airport, Marcelo Pires Halzhausen State Airport. An old railroad, Estrada de Ferro Sorocabana, runs through Assis. Many highways connect Assis to other major cities in the region, and to the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná.

Assis helps the whole region grow. It influences nearby cities in its own microregion, and even some towns in the Ourinhos and Marília areas, and northern Paraná. This is because of its strong trade, services, cultural activities, sports, science, and technology. Because of this, Assis is called the Capital of Paranapanema. This is true even though there are bigger cities nearby like Marilia, Presidente Prudente, and Londrina.
