Atlas Community

  • Atlas is a community within the township that isn't an official city or village. It's about 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Flint. The area has a special ZIP code which is 48411. It used to be called Davisonville.

Goodrich Village

  • The Village of Goodrich is right in the middle of Atlas Township. It has its own ZIP code, 48438.

Other Areas

  • The part of the township in the northeast is considered a suburb of Flint.
  • Kipp Corners is another community in the township. You can find it south of Kipp Road, near M-15 and Horton Road.

History of Atlas Township

Atlas Township was officially set up in 1836. It was originally part of Lapeer County. It was one of the first places in this area where people came to live.

Early Settlers

  • The very first settler was Asa Farrar. He bought land in 1839 and built a log house.
  • His brother, Pearson Farrar, also settled nearby in Grand Blanc. Both brothers came from New York.
  • Asa Farrar's family had the first baby born and the first marriage in the township in the early 1830s.

Davisonville and Goodrich Beginnings

  • In 1831, Norman Davison started a settlement called Davisonville. It was near Kearsley Creek.
  • This settlement quickly became important for the township. A saw-mill was built in 1833, and a grist-mill (for grinding grain) in 1836.
  • The village of Goodrich began in 1835. Moses and Enos Goodrich bought a lot of land and built a log cabin.
  • In 1843, Atlas Township was moved from Lapeer County to Genesee County.

Recent Events

  • In 2024, Atlas Township was hit by a very strong tornado. It was rated as an EF3 tornado.
  • The tornado caused a lot of damage. It broke many trees and damaged buildings, including an industrial complex.
