Attica on the map of Greece

Attica is a region in Greece. It is one of the areas that make up the country. Attica is home to Athens, which is the capital city of Greece. Long ago, this area was the heart of the powerful ancient Athenian state. Today, Attica is the most populated region in Greece, with about 3.5 million people living there.

Exploring Attica's Geography

Attica is located in the southern part of Greece. It is a peninsula, which means it's a piece of land almost surrounded by water. It sits between the Peloponnese region and the large island of Euboea. The very tip of Attica to the south is called Cape Sounion.

Mountains and Borders

Attica has five main mountains that are taller than 1,000 meters (about 3,280 feet). The tallest is Parnitha. The other important mountains are Penteli, Hymettus, Pateras mountain, and Kithairon. Attica shares its land borders with two other regions: Boeotia to the north and Corinthia to the west.

Surrounding Seas

The region of Attica is surrounded by water on its other sides. To the west, you'll find the Saronic gulf. To the east, there's the South Euboean gulf. Both of these gulfs are part of the larger Aegean Sea.
