Early Life
Austin St. John grew up with his parents, Steve and Sharon, and his brother, Stephen. His dad was a U.S. Marine and also a martial artist. Because his dad was in the military, Austin lived in many different places across the United States as a kid.
Acting Career
Austin St. John got his first and most famous acting job when he was just 17 years old. He was chosen to play the teen superhero Jason Lee Scott, the Red Power Ranger. This was for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the first show in the Power Rangers series. It first aired on Fox Kids in 1993. For this role, he picked the stage name Austin St. John. He chose "Austin" from the character Steve Austin in The Six Million Dollar Man. "St. John" was a name he liked.
Just like Austin, his character Jason was skilled in martial arts. The show became very popular and made Austin famous around the world. But working long hours for low pay was tough. Austin and his co-stars, including Jason David Frank, wanted better pay and to join a union. They planned to leave the show if their requests were not met. In the end, only Austin, Walter Emanuel Jones, and Thuy Trang left the show. Steve Cardenas took over as the Red Ranger.
Austin St. John played Jason again many times in movies and TV shows. He had a regular role in Power Rangers Zeo. He also appeared in an episode of Power Rangers Wild Force called "Forever Red" in 2002. In 1999, he was on a special called Power Rangers: The Lost Episode with Walter Emanuel Jones. This special looked back at the history of the Power Rangers and showed the very first pilot episode, which had never been seen before.
In 2017, he made a small appearance in the movie Surge of Power: Revenge of the Sequel. In 2018, he acted in the TV movie Monsters At Large. He also had a main role in the 2019 movie A Walk with Grace.
In 2020, Austin played Jason again in an episode of Power Rangers Beast Morphers called "Grid Connection." In 2022, he was the main actor in the movie Tres Leches. John Schneider directed this film. You can watch it for free on Schneider's YouTube channel.
Other Projects
Austin St. John is a skilled martial artist. He has a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo, a first-degree black belt in Judo, and a first-degree black belt in Kenpo. For a while, he taught martial arts. He also wrote a book about it in 1996 called Karate Warrior: A Beginner's Guide to Martial Arts.
In early 2024, Austin announced a new clothing line. It was first planned to feature quotes from "warriors." After some discussion, the theme was changed to "wise leaders." The clothing line is now called Wise Leader Wear. It includes quotes from important historical figures like Anne Frank.
