What Happens in Day of the Dumpster?
Rita Repulsa is Freed
The story begins with two astronauts exploring the Moon. They find a strange space dumpster. When they open it, a very old and evil sorceress named Rita Repulsa is set free! She had been trapped for 10,000 years. Her helpers, Goldar, Squatt, Baboo, and Finster, are also released.
Rita quickly decides to conquer the closest planet: Earth. She rebuilds her palace right there on the Moon.
Meet the Teenagers
Meanwhile, on Earth, in a city called Angel Grove, California, five teenagers are hanging out. Their names are Jason Lee Scott, Zack Taylor, Billy Cranston, Trini Kwan, and Kimberly Hart. They are at the Angel Grove Youth Center. Jason and Zack are practicing karate. Trini and Kimberly are doing gymnastics.
Two bullies, Farkas Bulkmeier and Eugene Skullovitch (known as Bulk and Skull), try to bother them. But they just end up looking silly themselves.
Zordon Calls for Help
Later, the teens are enjoying fruit shakes at Ernie's Juice Bar. Suddenly, Rita causes a big earthquake! Far away in the desert, in a secret place called the Command Center, lives Zordon. He is a wise wizard who fought Rita a long time ago.
Zordon tells his robot friend, Alpha 5, to find five brave teenagers. Alpha 5 quickly teleports Jason, Zack, Billy, Trini, and Kimberly to the Command Center.
Becoming Power Rangers
Zordon explains that Rita is back and wants to take over Earth. He tells the teens that they are chosen to be the first Power Rangers! He gives them special devices called Power Morphers. These morphers will let them use their new powers.
At first, the teenagers don't believe Zordon. But then, Rita sends her clay monsters, the Putty Patrollers, to attack them outside. The Putties are too many for the teens to handle. Jason then suggests they use their Power Morphers. They instantly transform into the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers!
First Battle as Rangers
Alpha 5 tells Zordon that the teens have morphed. Zordon then teleports the Rangers to Angel Grove City. Rita has sent Goldar, one of her strongest monsters, to attack the city.
The Power Rangers fight Goldar and more Putty Patrollers on the city rooftops. Soon, Rita uses her magic to make Goldar grow giant-sized! To fight back, the Rangers summon their huge robot dinosaurs, the Dinozords. They then combine the Dinozords to form the mighty Megazord!
After a tough battle, the Rangers use the Megazord's Power Sword. This forces Goldar to retreat.
Accepting the Mission
Back at the Command Center, the teens are finally convinced. They realize they can truly save the world from Rita's evil plans. They agree to become Power Rangers under three important rules:
- They must never use their power for selfish reasons.
- They should not start a fight unless Rita forces them to.
- They must keep their identities a secret. No one can know they are Power Rangers!
Zordon promises to always be there to help and guide them.

Unaired Pilot Episodes
Before "Day of the Dumpster" aired, there were earlier versions of the first episode.
First Pilot (1999 Special)
An early pilot was shown in a 1999 TV special called "The Lost Episode." It had the same basic story but with some differences:
- Actress Audri DuBois played Trini.
- Bobby Val played Skull.
- The villains had different voice actors.
- The hangout spot was a bowling alley, not Ernie's Juice Bar.
- Alpha 5 looked a bit different.
In its very first, unedited form, the Zords were called "Droids." The Power Morphers were called "Transmorphers." Zordon was even called "Zoltar"! The morphing and teleporting scenes were also different.
Second Pilot (2007 Convention)
A second pilot episode was shown in 2007 at a Power Rangers convention. This version was closer to the final show. It featured Thuy Trang as Trini, Jason Narvy as Skull, and Richard Genelle as Ernie. Some scenes from this second pilot were later used in another episode called "Big Sisters."
Re-versioning in 2010
In 2010, the series was re-aired with some changes. New visual effects were added to scenes. Some parts were cut out. For example, comic book-style graphics and sound effect words (like "POW!") appeared on screen. This was similar to the old 1960s Batman TV show.
