Austroraptor (pronounced AW-stroh-RAP-ter) was a fascinating dinosaur that lived a long, long time ago, during the Late Cretaceous Period. Imagine a large, fast-running dinosaur that walked on two legs and hunted other animals! This amazing creature was a type of theropod, a group of dinosaurs known for being carnivores. Austroraptor called what is now Argentina home, roaming the ancient lands about 76.5 to 68 million years ago. It was one of the biggest raptor-like dinosaurs ever found in the Southern Hemisphere!

Discovering the Southern Thief
The very first Austroraptor fossil, known as the holotype (which means the main specimen used to describe a new species), was found in 2002. A team led by Fernando Emilio Novas from the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales discovered it in a place called Bajo de Santa Rosa in Río Negro, Argentina. The fossil wasn't a complete skeleton, but it included parts of its skull, jaw, some backbones, ribs, an arm bone (humerus), and pieces from its legs.
In 2008, scientists officially named and described this new dinosaur. They called it Austroraptor cabazai. The name Austroraptor is Latin and means "Southern Thief." "Austro" comes from "auster," meaning "south wind," and "raptor" means "thief." The second part of its name, cabazai, honors Héctor "Tito" Cabaza. He founded the Museo Municipal de Lamarque, where some of the fossil studies took place.
Later, in 2012, another Austroraptor fossil was found. This one was a bit smaller and helped scientists learn even more about its arms, hands, and feet.
What Made Austroraptor Special?
Austroraptor was a truly impressive dinosaur. It could grow to be about 5 to 6 meters (16 to 20 feet) long, which is longer than a small car! It weighed around 300 to 520 kilograms (660 to 1,146 pounds). This made it one of the largest raptor-like dinosaurs, similar in size to giants like Achillobator and Utahraptor.
A Head for Hunting
One of the most striking features of Austroraptor was its long, low skull, which was about 80 centimeters (31 inches) long. This skull was quite different from other raptor dinosaurs. Its teeth were also unique: they were cone-shaped and didn't have serrations (like tiny saw edges) that many meat-eating dinosaurs had. Instead, their surface had small grooves. Scientists have compared these teeth to those of spinosaurids, a group of dinosaurs known for eating fish.
Short Arms, Big Mystery
Unlike many other dromaeosaurs (the family of dinosaurs Austroraptor belongs to), Austroraptor had surprisingly short front limbs. Its upper arm bone (humerus) was less than half the length of its thigh bone (femur). This is quite unusual for a raptor, as most had longer, more powerful arms. This feature has even led some people to compare it to the famous Tyrannosaurus, another dinosaur known for its short arms, though they are not closely related.
Scientists also noticed some unique features in its skull bones and the shape of its toes, which helped them identify it as a distinct species. For example, a bone in its skull called the lacrimal bone was very airy and curved in a special way.
Austroraptor's Family Tree
Scientists use a method called cladistics to figure out how dinosaurs are related to each other. Based on studying its bones, Austroraptor was placed in a group called Unenlagiinae, which is a subfamily within the larger Dromaeosauridae family. This means it's a relative of other raptor-like dinosaurs.
Austroraptor was found to be a close relative of another unenlagiine dinosaur called Buitreraptor. They share some special features in their neck bones.

How Austroraptor Lived and Hunted
Scientists believe that unenlagiine dinosaurs, like Austroraptor, were excellent runners and very good at chasing their prey. Unlike some other raptors that were more heavily built, unenlagiines were more slender and could likely run at high speeds for a long time. Their leg bones were adapted for this, being relatively thin and long.
What Did Austroraptor Eat?
Based on these adaptations, it's thought that Austroraptor probably hunted small, fast-moving animals. Its close relative, Buitreraptor, is thought to have chased prey over long distances and used its long arms and curved claws to catch and hold victims. Buitreraptor likely swallowed its prey whole because its teeth weren't designed for tearing flesh.
Austroraptor was much larger, and its hunting style might have been a bit different:
- Because of its short arms, it probably didn't use them much to handle prey.
- Its cone-shaped, strong teeth suggest it might have been able to hunt larger prey than Buitreraptor.
In 2021, some scientists suggested that Austroraptor and its relative Ypupiara might have eaten a lot of fish! Their non-serrated, conical teeth are very similar to those of modern fish-eating animals like gavialoids (a type of crocodile) and ancient fish-eating dinosaurs like spinosaurids. This means Austroraptor might have been a "fish thief" of the ancient rivers and lakes!
Austroraptor's Ancient Home
Austroraptor lived in what is now Argentina, in an area known as the Allen Formation. This was during the Campanian and Maastrichtian stages of the Late Cretaceous period, roughly 78 to 66 million years ago. This means it lived right up until the very end of the dinosaur age!
The environment where Austroraptor lived was rich and diverse. It shared its home with many other dinosaurs and early mammals. The discovery of Austroraptor helped scientists understand that raptor-like dinosaurs in the Southern Hemisphere came in many shapes and sizes, from large ones with short arms to smaller ones with long arms.
Austroraptor was one of the big predators in its ecosystem, hunting alongside other large meat-eaters like abelisaurids such as Quilmesaurus, Aucasaurus, and Carnotaurus.
The Allen Formation was home to many plant-eating dinosaurs too, especially large titanosaurs like Laplatasaurus, Rocasaurus, Saltasaurus, and Aeolosaurus. There were also hadrosaurids (duck-billed dinosaurs) like Bonapartesaurus, Kelumapusaura, and Lapampasaurus, and even ancient birds like Limenavis. This shows that the area had a wide variety of plants and habitats to support all these different animals.
