Austwell (/ˈɔːswɛl/ AW-swel) is a small city in Refugio County, Texas, United States. It is located in the northeastern part of the county. In 2010, about 147 people lived there. By 2020, the population was 118.

History of Austwell

Austwell was started in 1911. The city's name comes from two people: Preston R. Austin and Jesse C. McDowell. They were the founders of the city.

Austwell is located at 28°23′25″N 96°50′37″W / 28.39028°N 96.84361°W / 28.39028; -96.84361. It is a small city, covering about 0.4 square miles (0.94 square kilometers) of land.

Location and Nearby Areas

To the north of Austwell is Hynes Bay. This bay is part of San Antonio Bay. The city is also close to the mouth of the Guadalupe River. This river flows into the bay.

About 8 miles (13 km) south of Austwell is the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is a very important place. It helps protect the whooping crane, which is a large, rare bird.
