Avisaíl García's Baseball Journey
Starting with the Detroit Tigers
Early Years (2011–2012)
Avisaíl García began his journey with the Detroit Tigers. He was invited to their spring training in 2011 and 2012. After the 2011 season, he was added to the Tigers' main roster. In 2012, he was named the best minor league player for the Tigers' farm system.
García first played for the major league team on August 31, 2012. He played very well, hitting for a .319 average in 23 games. He even made it to the playoff roster. People often noticed that Avisaíl looked a lot like his former teammate, Miguel Cabrera. This earned him the nickname "Little Miggy." Both players are tall, weigh about the same, bat right-handed, and are from Venezuela.
2013 Season
García hoped to make the Tigers' opening day roster in 2013. However, he had to go on the disabled list in March because of a heel injury. He joined the Tigers in May when another player, Austin Jackson, was injured. On May 15, García hit his very first home run in the major leagues.
In June, García was sent to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens team. But he was called back to the Tigers just four days later. On July 7, 2013, while playing for the Toledo Mud Hens, García achieved something special. He hit for the cycle in a game. This means he hit a single, a double, a triple, and a home run all in the same game! For the Tigers in 2013, he batted .241.
Playing for the Chicago White Sox
Joining the White Sox (2013–2014)
On July 30, 2013, Avisaíl García was traded to the Chicago White Sox. This was part of a big trade involving three teams. García first played for the White Sox's Triple-A team, the Charlotte Knights. Between the Knights and the Toledo Mud Hens, he had the highest batting average in the International League at .374.
When the White Sox traded another player, they brought García up to the major leagues. He played his first game with the White Sox on August 10. He got his first hit with the team in that game.
In April 2014, García hurt his left shoulder while trying to catch a ball. Tests showed he had a torn labrum, which is a part of the shoulder. Many thought he would miss the whole season. But García recovered very quickly! He was back playing on August 16, 2014. Even though he only played in 46 games that year, he still hit seven home runs and had 29 RBIs.
