José Miguel Cabrera Torres (born April 18, 1983), known as "Miggy", is a retired Venezuelan professional baseball player. He played 21 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Florida Marlins and Detroit Tigers. Miggy was an amazing hitter and played different positions like first baseman, third baseman, and designated hitter.

He started his MLB career in 2003. He won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award twice in the American League (AL). He also won the AL batting title four times. Miggy was chosen for the MLB All-Star team 12 times.

In 2012, Cabrera achieved something very rare: he won the Triple Crown. This means he led his league in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in (RBI) all in the same season. He was the first player to do this in 45 years!

Miggy is one of only three players in MLB history to have a career batting average above .300, hit 500 home runs, and get 3,000 hits. The other two are baseball legends Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. Many people think Cabrera is one of the greatest hitters ever.

He signed with the Florida Marlins in 1999 when he was 16. He quickly moved up through their minor league teams. He made his MLB debut in 2003 at age 20. That same year, he helped the Marlins win the World Series. After playing for the Marlins for four seasons, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers in 2008.

In 2012, Miggy led the AL with a .330 batting average, 44 home runs, and 139 RBIs. This amazing performance earned him the AL MVP award. In 2013, he continued to play incredibly well, even though he had some injuries later in the season. He finished with a career-high .348 batting average and won his second straight AL MVP award.

Cabrera won four AL batting titles, including three in a row from 2011 to 2013. He batted over .300 in 11 different seasons. He hit 30 or more home runs in ten seasons and drove in over 100 runs in 12 seasons. He holds the record for most career home runs and hits by a Venezuelan player. He joined the 500 home run club in 2021 and the 3,000 hit club in 2022. He is one of only seven players in MLB history to reach both of these huge milestones. Miggy also played for Venezuela in five World Baseball Classic tournaments. He retired after the 2023 season but will keep working with the Tigers.

Early Life and Baseball Beginnings

Miguel Cabrera was born in Maracay, Aragua State, Venezuela. His parents are Miguel Cabrera and Gregoria Torres de Cabrera. When he was young, Miggy liked both volleyball and baseball. His uncle, David Torres, helped guide him in baseball. At 14, he went to a special baseball school in Cagua so he could keep studying while playing.

Starting in the Minor Leagues

The Marlins signed Miggy in 1999 as a young, unsigned player. He started his professional career in 2000 as a shortstop. He played for different minor league teams like the GCL Marlins and the Utica Blue Sox. During the winter, his manager moved him from shortstop to third base.

In 2001, he played for the Kane County Cougars. He even got to play in the All-Star Futures Game during the All-Star Weekend. He was known for having a very strong arm.

In 2002, he moved up to the Jupiter Hammerheads. He continued to play third base. He had a good season, hitting .278 with many doubles and RBIs.

By 2003, Miggy was playing for the Double-A Carolina Mudcats. He was hitting very well, with a .365 average, 10 home runs, and 59 RBIs. Because of his great performance, he was called up to the major leagues.
