A Look Back in Time: Avon's History
Long ago, in the 1600s, the area that is now Avon was much larger. It included what we know today as Avon Lake, Bay Village, and Westlake.
Different Native American tribes lived here. These included the Wyandots, Ottawas, and Eries. They built homes like wigwams or simple stone shelters. They traded goods and lived in the area for many years. Later, they were forced to move to other places.
The first American settlers arrived in 1814. They came from Montgomery County, New York, led by Wilbur Cahoon. This area was first called "Xeuma." Later, it was renamed "Troy Township."
In 1824, Lorain County was created. Troy Township then changed its name to Avon Township. An Avon post office opened in 1825. The entire township became a village in 1917. Finally, in 1961, it officially became the City of Avon.
