The Avonmore River is a beautiful river in County Wicklow, Ireland. Its name, An Abhainn Mhór, means "the big river" in Irish. It's also sometimes called Abhainn Dé. This river flows through lovely landscapes and is an important part of the local environment.

The Avonmore River: A Journey Through Wicklow

The Avonmore River starts its journey in Lough Dan, a lake high up in the Wicklow Mountains. This area is west of a village called Roundwood. From there, the river flows mostly south.

Where Does the Avonmore River Start and End?

The Avonmore River travels for about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles). It stays entirely within East Wicklow from its start to its end.

From Lough Dan to the Sea

The river eventually meets another river, the River Avonbeg. This meeting point is famous and is known as the Meeting of the Waters. In Irish, this is called Cumar an dá Uisce.

When the Avonmore and Avonbeg rivers join, they form a new river called the River Avoca. The River Avoca then continues its journey. It flows all the way to the Irish Sea at a town called Arklow.

What's Along the River's Path?

As the Avonmore River flows downstream from Lough Dan, it passes by several interesting places.

Villages and Towns

  • The river first reaches the village of Annamoe. Here, a road called the R755 regional road crosses over the river.
  • From Annamoe, the river flows down to Laragh.
  • It then continues through a valley that is heavily covered with trees, heading towards Rathdrum.

Famous Places Along the River

Near Rathdrum, the Avonmore River flows through the lands of Avondale House. This historic house was once the home of Charles Stewart Parnell. He was a very important political leader in Irish history.

A few kilometers south of Avondale, the Avonmore River meets the Avonbeg River. This is the famous Meeting of the Waters we mentioned earlier. It's a beautiful spot where the two rivers become one.
