Dato' Seri Ahmad Azhar bin Othman (born on November 24, 1968), known as Awie, is a famous Malaysian singer, musician, and actor. Many people think Awie is one of the best singers Malaysia has ever had.

Awie was born in Datuk Keramat, Kuala Lumpur. He started his music journey in 1985 when he was just 17 years old. He became the lead singer of a rock band called Wings. Their first album, Belenggu Irama, came out in 1987 and sold about 180,000 copies. This was a huge success for a new band! After that, Awie recorded four more hit albums with Wings between 1988 and 1993.

Awie also started acting and appeared in the movie Pemburu Bayang in 1993. He starred in many movies during the 1990s. In 1993, Awie left Wings due to disagreements with the band's manager. As a solo artist, Awie became one of Malaysia's top-selling musicians and was very successful.

In the early 2000s, Awie's music career slowed down a bit, but he continued to act in many movies, especially comedies. He later rejoined Wings and recorded two more albums with them. This made him one of the few Malaysian artists to release studio albums in four different decades (1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s). In 2017, the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah, gave him the title Dato'. Now, he is known as Dato' Ahmad Azhar Bin Othman or Dato' Awie.

Starting in Music

When Awie was 17, he worked at Panggung Anniversary in Kuala Lumpur. This job allowed him to meet and spend time with popular rock bands of that time, like Search and Ella & The Boys. This experience helped him learn a lot about the music world.

Awie and bassist Eddie started the band Wings in 1985. Eddie, who was the band's leader, chose Awie to be the lead singer right from the start. Their first album was Belenggu Irama. Their next album, Hukum Karma, had popular songs like "Misteri Mimpi Syakilla" and "Taman Rashidah Utama". They released many more albums, including Teori Domino, Jerangkung Dalam Almari, and Bazooka Penaka. Many of Wings' hit songs were written by the famous singer-songwriter M. Nasir.

Awie left Wings in 1993 to start his own solo music career and act in movies. He came back to Wings in 2002 because fans really wanted him back. The band is still active today. They have had concerts like Wings Alive 2006 and Wings Live in KL 1991. Awie also joined another band called Samudera Astana.

Solo Music Success

After leaving Wings in 1993, Awie released his first solo album, simply called Awie, in 1994. It sold about 220,000 copies, which was a record for a male solo artist in Malaysia at that time! He then released other successful albums like Awie Unplugged (1995), O-Tak (1996), and Satu (1998). His collection album, Best Of Awie (1999), sold between 300,000 and 600,000 copies.

Awie started his acting career in 1992 with the movie Pemburu Bayang. He then starred in other popular local films, including Bara and the Sembilu movie series. More recently, Awie has focused on acting in funny, comedic roles.

Awie's Personal Life

Awie was once engaged to actress Erra Fazira, who was his co-star in the movie Sembilu. Later, Awie married Arni Nazira, and they had two daughters together. They later divorced. He then married Rozana Misbun. In 2016, Awie married Sharifah Ladyana Syed Samsuddin in Songkhla, Thailand.
