Erra Fazira (born Fazira Wan Chek on 9 February 1974) is a famous Malaysian actress, singer, and TV host. She also used to be a fashion model and won the title of Miss Malaysia World in 1992.

She became very popular in the 1990s because of her roles in movies like Sembilu, Sembilu 2, Maria Mariana, and Pasrah. Erra Fazira won awards for her acting, including two Best Actress awards at the Malaysia Film Festival. She won for her roles in Soal Hati (2001) and Hingga Hujung Nyawa (2005).

Early Life and School Days

Fazira was born in Sungai Choh, a small town in Rawang, Selangor. She was the first child and only daughter of Wan Chek and Azizah Zaik. Her parents are Malays.

Fazira was a very active student in school. She loved acting from a young age. She joined many school clubs like Scouting, St John Ambulance of Malaysia, the English Language Society, and the Culture Club. She also played sports, representing her school in Netball. Fazira believes that being involved in these clubs helped her a lot in her later career. She attended several schools, including SM Puteri Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur.

Erra Fazira's Career Journey

Becoming Miss Malaysia (1992)

When she was 18, Fazira's aunt encouraged her to join the 1992 Malaysian beauty pageant. She competed against thirteen other contestants and won the title of Miss Malaysia World 1992. As Miss Malaysia, Fazira then represented her country at the Miss World 1992 pageant. This big event was held in Sun City, South Africa. She did well, securing 15th place in the first part of the competition.

Singing Career (1993–2007)

After her first movie, Sembilu, came out in 1994, Fazira released her first music album, called Erra Fazira. She recorded two more albums with Polygram Records before joining Sony Music. Her first album with Sony Music was Kini in 1999.

In 2001, her song "Sandarkan" was chosen by TV3 for a special 3D campaign. Viewers could watch the music video in 3D with special glasses. Her fifth album, Sampai Bertemu, was released in 2002, followed by Kini Kembali in 2004.

In 2005, Erra Fazira was one of several Malaysian artists who sang a special song called "Suluhkan Sinar" ("Shine the Light"). This song was made by KRU and was dedicated to the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Her seventh and last studio album, Ya Atau Tidak, came out in 2006.

In 2019, Fazira released a new song called "Menangkah Cinta." This was her first new song in 13 years.

Acting Career (1994–Present)

The director Yusof Haslam asked Fazira to play the main role in his movie Sembilu. The film was released on 18 August 1994. This movie was also the first time Erra worked with her former boyfriend, Awie. She continued to act in many more films, including a sequel to Sembilu the next year.

From 1996 to 2000, Fazira starred in four more films directed by Yusof. She played Maria Zakaria in Maria Mariana and its sequel Maria Mariana II. In the 2000 film Soal Hati, Fazira played Nurul Ain. For this role, she won the Malaysia Film Festival Award for Best Actress.

After 2001, Fazira started working with many different directors. She starred in Mr. Cinderella (2002) and Cinta Kolestrol (2003). In 2004, Fazira acted alongside her former husband, Yusry bin Abdul Halim, in the movie Hingga Hujung Nyawa. For her role as Nora Halim in this film, Fazira won another Malaysia Film Festival Award for Best Actress.

From 2018 to 2021, she was part of the cast of the long-running Malaysian action drama series, Gerak Khas. She played the role of ASP Jeslina. She later played this role again in the series' spin-off, Gerak Khas: Undercover.

Personal Life

Erra Fazira married Malaysian singer and actor Yusry Abd Halim from KRU on 15 June 2003. They divorced on 16 June 2006.

She later married Engku Emran Engku Zainal Abidin in 2007. They had a daughter together. They divorced on 18 January 2014.
