Early Life and Music Start
Growing Up in California
Al Hasan Naqiyy was born Arlandis Hinton in Compton, California, on January 23, 1975. His mother, Christine Thomas, raised him. He had an older half-brother named Andre Wicker, also known as Dresta. Growing up in Compton and Watts, he became involved in local street groups.
First Steps in Music
Naqiyy shared that a music label liked his demo tape. They wanted him to join a group called Bloods & Crips for a 1993 project. This project was about street groups. Naqiyy decided not to join. He felt it would be too dangerous. He explained that many people involved in similar music faced serious risks. He said some even lost their lives because of such songs.
Naqiyy learned from other artists like DJ Quik. Before DJ Quik's first album, many of his songs were about street life. He later changed some lyrics. Naqiyy saw that even popular artists faced challenges when making music about these topics.
Meeting Eazy-E and a Famous Song
In 1993, Naqiyy started his music career. He met rapper and producer Eric Wright, known as Eazy-E. At that time, Eazy-E had a disagreement with his former group members, Andre Young (Dr. Dre) and Calvin Broadus (Snoop Dogg). Eazy-E was planning a song to respond to them.
Eazy-E's team heard about Naqiyy and his brother Dresta. They were both known for rapping. Dresta went to the studio first. He wrote lyrics for a song with Eazy-E. The next day, Dresta brought Naqiyy to the studio. Naqiyy added a verse to the song right there. Naqiyy explained that they were young and got involved in a musical disagreement.
The song they created was "Real ... Gs". This song became a very important "diss track" in hip-hop history. A "diss track" is a song made to criticize another artist. This song was known for being very direct. It talked about rivals' pasts and challenged their public image. "Real ... Gs" became Eazy-E’s most successful solo song. It reached No. 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This song influenced how future diss tracks were made.
The song was part of Eazy-E's album It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa, released that same year. Naqiyy also appeared on the song "Down 2 Tha Last Roach" on that album. The album sold over two million copies. A reviewer from The News Tribune called Naqiyy a "talented newcomer."
Music Career and Later Works
Success in the Mid-1990s
In August 1995, Naqiyy and Dresta released their first album together, Real Brothas. It was released through Def Jam and Outburst records. The album was successful on the charts. It reached #128 on the Billboard 200. It also hit #15 on the US Top R&B Albums and #5 on the US Heatseekers Albums charts.
During this time, Naqiyy was featured on other important hip-hop albums. These included Menajahtwa's Cha-licious (1994) and Murder Squad's Knock On Wood (1995). .....
Break from Music
In 1998, Naqiyy took a break from his music career. He returned to music in 2008. During this time, he still made some guest appearances. He was on Flesh-n-Bone's 5th Dog ... Loose (2000) and Tha Dogg Pound's Dogg ... (2007).
Return to Music and Recent Albums
In 2011, Naqiyy released the album Eazy-E's Protege. He chose this title to honor Eazy-E. He felt that Eazy-E did not get enough recognition for his contributions to hip-hop. Naqiyy believes Eazy-E helped create the freedom for artists to express themselves in music. He wanted to make sure people remember Eazy-E's important role in music history.
After this, Naqiyy released more albums. These include Nutty by Nature (2015), Blocc Boyz (2015), and St. L.A. (2015). He also released Uncommon (2017), Da New Crip (2017), and 5st Regime Change (2018). On August 10, 2019, he released a single called "Nobody Move." It featured Ricc Rocc and Michael ACE.
Personal Life
While taking a break from music, Naqiyy became a Muslim. He changed his birth name to Al Hasan Naqiyy. He explained that he wanted to learn more and started reading a lot. After studying Islam, he decided to become a Muslim.
