B. Satya Narayan Reddy (born August 21, 1927 – died October 6, 2012) was an important person in India's history. He was a freedom fighter who helped India gain independence. Later, he became a politician and served as the Governor of three different Indian states: Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal. He passed away at the age of 85 in Hyderabad.
Early Life and Education
B. Satya Narayan Reddy grew up in a farming family in a village called Annaram. This village is in the Mehboobnagar district of Telangana. He went to Nizam College in Hyderabad. After that, he studied law and earned his degree from Osmania University.
A Fighter for Freedom
When B. Satya Narayan Reddy was only 14 years old, he joined the Quit India Movement in 1942. This was a big movement where people in India demanded independence from British rule. He was arrested for leading a student protest after Mahatma Gandhi was arrested.
Later, in 1947, he took part in the Hyderabad Peoples' Movement. During this time, he organized a peaceful protest called a satyagraha against the local ruler, the Nizam. Because of this, he was arrested again and spent six months in Chanchalguda Jail. While in prison, he created a weekly newspaper called Payam-e-Nav and shared it with other prisoners.
His Journey in Politics
B. Satya Narayan Reddy was inspired by famous leaders like Acharya Narendra Dev and Jaiprakash Narayan. He became involved in the Socialist Movement, which aimed for fairness and equality for everyone in society. He also participated in Vinobha Bhave's Bhoodan Movement, where people donated land to help the poor.
He was part of different political parties over the years, including the Socialist Party, the Janata Party, and the Lok Dal. In 1978, he was chosen to be a member of the Rajya Sabha. The Rajya Sabha is one of the two houses of India's Parliament, like a big meeting place where laws are made. In 1983, he joined the Telugu Desam Party and was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1984.
Serving as Governor
B. Satya Narayan Reddy served as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh from February 12, 1990, to May 25, 1993. A Governor is like the main leader of a state in India, representing the President.
After that, he became the Governor of Odisha from June 1, 1993, to June 17, 1995. For a short time, between July 13, 1993, and August 14, 1993, he also took on the extra responsibility of being the Governor of West Bengal. He was the Governor of Uttar Pradesh during a time of significant events in the state.
